Cheap Fares (and hotels) from San Francisco to Bangkok in May

I was looking to fly to Bangkok from San Francisco (or maybe LA if it's cheaper) in Mid May and return at the end of May. Seeing as how it is low season, I was looking for a good deal. The best one I have found so far is United for $680 including taxes/fees. Any ideas?

Also, any suggestions for good hotel deals in Phi Phi and Koh Samui?

Thanks in advance for you help!

That fare is about what you should expect to pay.

Check the websites for good deals on hotels. JamesA has some local Thai websites he recommends. Search this board for those posts or await his reply.

I'd certainly choose United for the extra $30.

Thanks for your replies, I just found this deal on Cathay Pacific for $599 + Taxes/Fees. However, no mileage is earned and penalties are stiff:

UP.. Check out iace-usa for prices to BKK via various airlines. Not sure about SFO, but I'm positive they quote prices from LAX. My mother uses them for trps to NRT every time.

these guys are offering 5 night at peninsula RTW airfare from sfo and city tours for $999. or you can pick from some decent hotels starting at $599 for everthing..

these tpes of independent tours are the best deals in the industry.. but for some reason neglected.

a good place too find great deals on these types of tours is by going too foders poor brotha. www.frommers.com

CX Leverage shows the fares in H class for mileage. Dept 5/17 return 5/30 is showing at $873. You may be able to do a little better by playing with the dates. Cancellation fee = $100.

Typically their mileage qualifying fares are $150-200 more than non mileage fares, but those trips do really pick up some serious miles.

CX is a bit more that UA in general, however I will pay the additional every time as the service is so much better than what I've experienced on any of the other carriers I've used for Asia travel.

BTW, if you happen to be AA platinum you get the use of the CX lounges as well.

Thaifly.com offers a flight from SFO to BKK for $635 on JAL. Given a choice between UA and JAL I'd take JAL.
