I'm a tech dummy and only have a cheapie tracfone here in the US, so if I want a phone in Asia I'll buy one there -- but I'm still confused. If I buy a phone and a sim card in Shanghai -- strictly for use within Asia, I have no plans to call home or receive calls from home-- will it work when I go to Hong Kong, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand? Or do I have to buy a new Sim card at each country?

And I'm also confused that if I buy a phone and Sim card in Shanghai -- is it going to work and/or cost me a small fortune to use it through the rest of China?

Geez. I apologize. I did a search here and came up with this thread, and now see it is over three years old, so I don't know if any of the information is still current.
