cell phone use in Manila

I have a Nextel and a Cingular phones. Can anybody tell me what I need to do to be able to use these phones in Manila? Is it just a matter of buying a sim card? If so, where can i buy these and what's the price range that I should expect? I intend to leave the phone itself to relatives in Manila, or is it cheaper to just buy the phones there?

Assuming your phones are usable in the Philippines (I used a Nokia, no probs) getting a Sim card is pretty simple and very cheap. You can robably get a sim with limited air time for around P200.

Actually I got a P15 discount because I bought a recharge card at the same time.

very cheap.

Thanks for the response. Nextel told me that as long as the phones are internet ready, there should be no problems.

BTW, I checked out your website. I, too, am going to Palawan. I was born there but left in 1963 at the age of 6. After seeing pix of the lizards, I will definitely go to Sabang as well as island hopping at Honday Bay. My hubby has never been out of the USA and he'll be in for one heck of a culture shock!!!

Currently, if you puchased your phone in the USA, the phone needs to be a GSM quad/tri band and UNLOCKED. You can tell if your phone is locked just by swapping a SIM card from another phone...and unlocked phone will simply recognize the new SIM and the phone number associated with that new SIM.

How about Verizon? I have a LG 8300 but it has no removeable SIM card....

oregon, if there's no place for a SIM card, no way you will be able to use it locally unless you'll take roaming for Verizon.
