JamesA, I think you're doing a wonderful job giving unbiased advice. I'll chip in a little - yes the country and the people of Thailand are still in mourning and will be for a long time. The service industry, apart from the areas affected by the disaster, is still going strong and should not affect any upcoming holidays planned here.

However, there will be people here, in other part of the affected countries of Asia and all around the world talking about this disaster for a long time. If you feel that this will affect your honeymoon then perhaps you should rethink your plans. I don't know if you can travel anywhere in the world and expect people not to talk or feel sad about this disaster. I can picture myself sitting on a beach in the Caribbean and thinking to myself, jeez.. what if the next wave swallow me up and drag me into the sea!

there is NO infrastructer prob in Bangkok. people in high rises felt the quake but those of us in the lower floors felt NOTHING..

I call them as i see em. Many "tourists" especially fodorites don't seem too be the type that looks for "real life" experiences when they go on vacation.. (which is cool), vacation/holiday too many is a time too relax and sit by a pool..

thats why I posted on a diffrent thread. To may'be stay away from BKK for a week or so becouse you may come accross some people who may have lost a loved one or something. and hearing storis like that can be depressing in any occasion...

yestersay I took a stroll too the gym and I saw a influx of shorts and sandle wearing tourists. some of them had that glazzed what the heck is going on, look too them it was strange.. but may'be it was me reading too much into the situation and the person just could not find the burger king he was looking for.

I've never been one too pramote people coming too a place just too chip in.. especially after a disaster.. "come too Iraq they need the your tourist money".. just use your gut instinct in these matters and as time goes on (which is usually with in a couple of months everyone will realize the scope of what happened and maybe choose too visit an area or not.

If you have a difrent philosophy on life and travel then WELCOME to bangkok.. the city looks biutifull with all its new years lights and life hasn't changed much..

all the opinions about finding other destination around thailand are verry good.

I've been watching some thai news and sceen some heartbreaking interviews with forigners cunducted at the airport in BANGKOK.. sorry too say but I still stick too my opinion that it may be better (FOR SOME) just too hold off for 2 weeks or so. as someone said it's not those leaving the country but famalies flying in from all over the world looking for there loved once... As a whole, Thailand feels the same. You have too remember that Buddists have a difrent philosophy on death and life.. they also seem to take hardship in stride.

Thanks to all the regular posters. We leave tomorrow for our SE Asia trip and I for one really appreciate all the time and effort you all put into this forum.
