Can you just walk in to China from Hong Kong

Maybe a silly question - but I am visiting HK in the new year, and was thinking of checking out Macau, but then stepping over in to China? Can I do that or do I need special papers?

What country issued your passport? That's the most pertinent question.
You may need a visa, maybe not. Suggest you check Google for info.
