Can anyone recommend a 4 star hotel in Beijing?
We are in Beijing for the first time end of July for one night. Can anyone recommend a hotel they have stayed in and liked fairly much in the centre of Beijing. We would like a very clean, good standard. Is it realistic to expect US$150 or less for the night?? I am not familiar with the different areas, there are so many, but would like to be central.

Less than US$150 per night? There are hundreds of Chinese-run 'four-star' (the system is largely meaningless in China) or new, clean, and comfortable options for that price, and not a few foreign options. In July you can in fact stay in some of the best hotels in Beijing for that amount or less (e.g. the Shangri-La, the Regent, Sofitel). July is not peak season in Beijing, and there's an oversupply of rooms for much of the year.
You need to begin by looking at whatever is your favourite flavour of guide book. If your choice is a foreign-run hotel you'll find its best prices on its own website. If a Chinese-run one then look at Ctrip for more realistic prices, as opposed to the published ones (which no one ever pays), although take hotel descriptions with a bucket of salt.
For a more general discussion on Chinese hotel pricing see towards the end of this link:

When you have some candidate hotels, others here will be able to tell you of their own experience of them.
Beijing central isn't so much of an issue as being near a metro station. With Beijing's traffic getting more coagulated by the week, it's often distance to the metro that defines ease of access, not simply being central.

We have been to Beijing 3 times and each time have stayed at the Grand Hyatt - great location!
easy walk to Waufujing (sp) St; less than 10 min. walk to Forbidden City; Tienamien (sp) Sq.; 1/2 hr or so walk to Temple of Heaven; some Hutongs around it
Great huge mall adjacent with wonderful restaurants and food court.
Good luck and enjoy your trip!
