Camel safari - hokey & commercial or worthwhile to do?

I can't quite make up my mind if this interests me at all or sounds too far too geared to a commercial & faux experience of India. I'm not inclined toward a cold night in a tent, either, although a day trek or a night in a homestay would be more my idea of the experience I'm imagining. Is a trek into the desert on camels a worthwhile & unique experience? Or is it too hokey and commercially-driven?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks,
Paule

we took it from jaislamer for the sun set... it was commercial and there were tons of people there..

it was fun but not life changing... as far as overnight i would never consider it..

Thanks, Bob. I'll add it to the "maybe" list.

Sounds like the Indian equivalent of the sunset in Oia in Santorini -- I enjoyed the experience but wouldn't say it was the touristic highlight of my trip.

As bob said, definitely commercial but worthwhile doing. The idea of tents or a homestays in India did not appeal to us either.

Thanks, June, I'll keep it on the list of definite maybes!

I did it from Jaisalmer through our hotel and we did an overnight. We never saw any other tourists. There were about five of us plus two guides. I thought it was great. Cold, but great. So we did not find it commercialized at all.

Thanks, that is helpful. What is the difference between the small trip you took and the ones that others have mentioned that are with large numbers of tourists?

The hotel advertised it as being away from the other tourists. Maybe we started in a different spot. We also did the overnight so we probably started earlier as the sun set after we had already arrived at our camping spot.
