by car from Chiang Mai to Sukothai
We've arranged for a car and driver to drive from Chiang Mai to Sukothai in early January. Someone just told us that we were nuts to go by road, that drivers were crazy and there were many accidents. We are inclined to go as planned, but anyone have any comments on the safety of these roads?

You'd be nuts to drive yourself, but having a driver should be safe enough as long as you're not doing this during a big holiday.
As I recall - and it's been a very long time since I did this drive - the most direct route passes through Lampang, which is a good place to stop if you have time for a few diversions on the way. The scenery south of Lampang is quite good, but that's also the potentially dangerous part.

If you go via Tuk most, if not all, of the trip will be on excellent divided highways. The route through Uttaradit is more interesting but also more exciting. In particular, I find the section between Uttaradit and Den Chai to be a little hairy! Not that I allow it to deter me.
I do try to avoid driving after dusk outside of towns.
