Buying Luggage in BKK
 

I have searched the forum for this answer--no luck. Where are the good luggage buys in BKK?

Will someone give me some suggestions. I want to "ditch" my outbound luggage when I get to BKK and buy new.

What about MBK? Also, what can I expect to pay?

tons of places to buy luggage....much of it is knockoffs....prices range from maybe $5 to over $200...

one place i have used is at the corner of sukhumvit and soi 4.....

mbk has luggage..

the major malls have luggage usually...

i would check central chitlom dept store on plenochit...quality would be reliable there...

remember most cheap things will fall apart in a trip or two or three...wheels fall off or get caught in airport mechanisms....

i think a good 22" suitcase rollie could be had for $50....

i bought a tall bag with one zip on the top and two handles that had four wheels loosly attached at the bottom for $7....its one of those ones that zips up the sides making it a small piece or a very tall piece--maybe 4 different sizes....lasted two trips...maybe even three...

I have definitely found high-quality luggage to be cheaper in the US. There are a lot of copies however in Bangkok. I once bought a copy carry-on bag only because I needed it to transport some items from Bangkok to Singapore. Then in Singapore, I knew I'd buy a high-quality bag to get the same items home in. Singapore has good sales. Well, the zipper separated on the Bangkok bag before I had even gotten off the plane in Singapore... so I gave the bag away to the chamber maid at my hotel who was happy to get it to lug all of her stuff to and from work in. As someone who has purchased extra bags on several of my BKK trips, I know you won't have a problem finding new luggage. Be sure you look around before buying so that you get the quality you want. I've bought pieces at the same place Bob mentions (soi 4 Sukhumvit corner) and also at MBK. Most of my purchases were large duffel bags for taking home extra goodies that I bought. You can buy all sizes of these, from smallish to HUGE-ish.

I also bought a carry-on size hard sider with 4 wheels on the bottom. It was a Ralph Lauren knockoff, from MBK, top floor I think. The airlines did a number on it though, and now it's not useable because the latches don't line up. It got out of alignment, don't ask me how that happened. I really liked the bag too!!!... darn!!

I bought a LV knockoff at MBK (3rd floor there are lots of luggage places) and it has worked very well now for several years. I'd say you should look on 3rd floor MBK because of the huge selection you will find. Look for the quality you want. Then make sure you offer half of their asking price and see what you end up paying. Have fun!!

Agree with Guenmai. I get my luggage from the Samsonite outlets in the US and Peters Of Kensington in Sydney.

Just one more note of agreement here. Name brands like Tumi and Victoronix are almost double in price here versus the US. You can get good cheap luggage in Thailand. I had one bag I used for nearly 10 years before I finally decided to ditch it. But it's kind of a crap shoot.

Is the mall called MBK? or, does MBK stand for something ?

"MBK" stand for Mah Boon Krong, the name of the founder of the business that own the mall.

Cilla Tey...Also T.J.Maxx and More and T.J.Maxx...can't beat the prices. I bought the largest Tumi suitcase, for my mom, at T.J.Maxx and More for US $ 249.99 red tagged...the regular T.J.Maxx price was US $299.99....at the Tumi store they were well over US$500...at the time. I also bought two Kipling bags with wheels...one a backpack with wheels and a big duffel bag with wheels...regular retail...$178. and $228....I bought them for either $39.99 or $49.99 each... and with no flaws.I have many other Kipling travel pieces for as low as US$19.99 from T.J.Maxx. They have the big name, high quality luggage...like tons of Swiss Army luggage,for example. And European brands. I bought a Brics carry-on...for US$39.99 and saw the same one in Paris at the Brics store for US$150.00 equivalent. The guy at that store even wrote down the name of T.J.Maxx stores in L.A. from me as he was on his way to L.A. to visit friends...and needed luggage. These are the L.A. county and Orange County stores....although T.J.Maxx is nationwide. I have no need to buy luggage in Bangkok...although I've checked it out and the prices out of curiosity. I learned my leason with buying cheap lugage. I now have a sturdy DELSEY roller which can take a beating. Their is no respect for peoples luggage in the states let alone here. name brand luggage like SAMSONITE etc. cost twice as much as in the US. I recently bought a really small Samsonite day backpack and that costs about $35.

We bought a big bag from MBK because my wife bought so much crap that we couldnt fit it all in the bags we brought! We now use it for our scuba dive bag and have taken it on many trips since then. but it is a crap shoot, its really hard to tell what you are getting.
this time we know better and are taking 2 empty suitcases and some bubble wrap!

The TJ Maxx stores around the US are not all the same. I've looked a number of times for good deals on name luggage at a local TJ M. None to be found. I really think you need to go to the two that guenmai named, in LA area, to get those deals on Tumi and Kipling. I have not seen those brands in the local stores.

Thank you everyone -- Guess I'll look at the TJMaax here and see what they have. If nothing, I will just keep what I have and let the airlines "do their thing."

Yes I went here last year, and to find another piece for my Delsey Set, as it turrned out my set, which I absolutly love, is a discontinued set, so I did not find the Piece I needed, but they had a TON of luggae and the prices were really good, and they were very helpful, and very willing to barter on the prices, which surprised me becuase I was told that at the department store there would not be much barting, I have to say on the clothes there were not, but on the luggage and the leather goods I was looking at, they were more than willing to bargin with you.

maybe those departments are concessions like they often are in usa??
