Bus vs Air vs Train & Penang vs Langkawi

After researching all options I am inclined to take bus between all points. It seems they all average about the same amount of time when you add in extra time to be at airport before the flight and many airports seem far out for addtl cost of getting there. I could not find on airline sites how soon to arrive before a flight say from KL to Penang. Is one hour preflight enough?

I was going to bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur on Big Red Bus--4.5 hours.
Can you take bags on city bus to Malaysia terminal or do I need to get cab? Or am I being too frugal and making more trouble for myself and should I just arrange for bus pickup in Singapore vs trying to cross border to Johru and save money.

I was considering ferry from Penang to Langkawi but some say it could be choppy and seasick inducing. People were kind of down on Langkawi but there seems to be more to do outdoors there than in Penang or am I wrong. Should I do 3 and 3 or can I do 2 nights Penang and 3 Langkawi?

Advice really appreciated, I am almost done with trip plans except for locking down travel between places. Last Q: good backpack for travel but not for hiking--lightweight but can expand to hold a lot if necessary.
