bus or train Tblisi/Baku - what is better

I planned to visit Armenia and Georgia in July and will rent a car for these two countries.
I was informed, that it is not possible to go with a rented car to Baku. Therefore I am thinking to go by bus or train. Somebody has made this experience and what is the cost.
Thanks

Heinz

Before you sign up to drive yourself you might want to read what Lonely Planet has to say about it. For instance: "It's easier and cheaper to hire a car and driver accustomed to the rich and varied local traffic conditions".

I didn't get to Azerbaijan (aside from the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh) and I traveled in Georgia and Armenia by bus and marshrutka. The train didn't work for my itinerary, but Lonely Planet recommends it over buses for long trips. It says Tbilisi to Baku is 14 hours, 40/78 GEL 2nd/1st class. It's out of date (published May '08) but transport in the Caucasus is really cheap.
