Bus from Kyoto to Tokyo
Hi we're going to Japan for 1 month... flying into Osaka. We have a 21 day JR pass but don't want to activate it till after tokyo. We were thinking of going straight from osaka airport to kyoto. Staying two nights in kyoto, then heading to tokyo through the mountains via Hakone (?).
We're planning on doing the trip from kyoto to tokyo by bus to save money. Does anyone have any experience with this segment?
In Kyoto we're planning on staying at Ryokan Hinomoto or Riverside. Not sure which to pick.
In Tokyo we're staying at Kimi Ryokan for 5 nights. These seem cheap but for the length of our trip we can afford much else.
The rest of the trip is unplanned but we'll have the 21 day JR pass!
All input appreciated! Thanks...

I can send you my files of advice that I have posted to others. I am not familiar with the hotels you have choosen but I am sure they will be very nice. All hotels in Japan are clean and neat. Email [email protected]. I may be able to provide you with more specifics. Myszka an expat living in Tokyo from Michigan

It is difficult for me to follow your reason for taking a bus from Kyoto to Tokyo. It seems to me that JR pass is worthwhile when you use it on Kyoto-Tokyo Shinkansen. Are you planning to travel to Tohoku and Hokkaido?

The real savings with the rail pass is with long distance express trains, so you should really fit your schedule in to work that out. While it's convenient to have the rail pass on local trains, there isn't much savings going on there; 5 days in tokyo for example, would be a much better time to cruise out part of the 7 days before activating the pass. Please post more of your schedule.

Bonjour Rotterdamo,
Pity you're only staying 2 days in Kyoto and vicinity. Both the Hinomoto and the Takase Riverside are nice and convenient for visiting the city, with the latter in a much more pleasant location (quiet street on the Takase canal, lined with trees and old houses).
I haven't been at the Kimi since 1983, I know it has been entirely rebuilt and is highly rated among travellers with small budget. Location is OK, although in a very busy part of town without much "authentic" character, but the youth scene is fine and you're on the Yamanote loop line, which is one of the most convenient to get around Tokyo.
Are you flying out of Tokyo ? If so, why directly go to Tokyo instead of activating your raipass from Kyoto, exploring other parts of Japan, and ending up with Tokyo ?
