Burma with a toddler
 

One of my very best friends is living in Burma for a year or two more. I really want to go visit her and have an opening on my calendar to go in November/dec of this year. I have a two year old son who would be traveling with me. Frankly getting to Burma from the U.S. with a two year old seems daunting. We survived the ten hour flight home fromAmsterdam this summer but I don't know about three days of travel to get to Burna.

And to add to my concern is the fact that my son has multiple food allergies. He's severely allergic to cashews. He's also allergic to peanuts, wheat, eggs, dairy and cottonseed oil. We do pretty well traveling except for breakfast but the thought of being so far away from medical care and him having an anaphylactic reaction worries me.

He's a good traveler but I'm wondering if it's just too much. Anyone have any thoughts? Things that would help and relieve my anxiety?

Since you don't say, I'm not sure why it would take you 3 days to get to Burma. In any case, I doubt I'd be comfortable traveling with a child who could become "severely" ill far from high-quality medical care. It sounds as if anxiety is your lot for the time being and I don't think Burma is the place for you.

I think your son's allergies would make this a very difficult trip. Can your son stay home with his father or grandparents?

Burma is only recently developing as a place that welcomes travelers. While European countries would understand about food allergies, I think it would be much more difficult in Burma. Just communicating the things your son is allergic to would be hard.

Do go visit your friend, Burma is an amazing country.

Where do you live in the US? It is a long slog to Burma. For me, in Seattle, I fly Seattle to Tokyo to Bangkok, overnight there, then on to Yangon. If I leave on a Monday, it's Tuesday just before midnight when I land in Bangkok and Wednesday when I get to Yangon, so I know what you mean about three days.

I would not take a child that might need medical care to Burma. On our recent trip to Burma, DH left his meds at home and we had to go to a hospital to get pills. It was ok for that, but would not be ok for care IMHO. Burma would be a fabulous trip if you could leave your child at home.

Thanks for all the thoughts. Leaving my son home is not an option and neither is taking him it seems. Oh well, there are other places in the world we can go.
