Budget Phuket and weather in August?

My husband and I are doing a weeks sail on the GBR in August. As long as we're going to be in that hemisphere (we're from Texas) hubby want's to add on another week for surfing. (He's been surfing for 30+ years) We've been to Fiji and Bali so I'm thinking Phuket? There is supposed to be decent surf there in the Monsoon Season of mid to late Aug. Since we're spending a lot of money on the sail, we need to go budget for the surf part of the trip. Any recommendations on good budget hotels? Mostly quiet ones for me while he's out surfing, but near some restaurants and maybe a little shopping. Also, just how bad will the weather be in this monsoon season?
Thanks

Phuket is not a surfing destination, also the Monsoon in August makes it very dangerous to swim at that time. I would certainly take the opportunity to visit Thailand but would forget about surfing in Phuket.

Thanks JamesA - as I first read the post refering to Phuket as a surfing destination I had to shake my head. No way and especially not during Monsoons.

If you want good surfing try South Africa, East Coast north of Durban, continuous waves that go on forever and ever from morning to night - never have to get off the board.

Thanks for the reply from both of you as you both seem to be great resources for traveling around Thialand. But I must say I'm a little confused by the replies. I realize Phuket is not a top surf destination such as Fiji and Bali, but Quicksilver has a surf contest in Phuket in September, so there must be decent waves this time of year. As for not being safe for swimming, well the North shore of Oahu is not safe for swimming either but people have been surfing there for decades! I guess the info I've been gettting in my research for surf in Phuket is wrong?

I lived on Phuket island for over 3 years and had a house there for the previous 10 years, now live in Bangkok, Surfing has never been big in Phuket. As far as safety is concerned Red Flags would be flying most of September and even close to shore there are very dangerous undercurrents which means that people just venturing into the sea close to shore take a huge dangerous risk. September is also peak of Monsoon season, very surprised Quicksilver having something that time of year, very strange indeed.
