Bringing Books into Myanmar
 

In particular, books like:

Saving the Fish From Dying
Land of the Green Ghosts
The River of Lost Footsteps: Histories of Burma
The Glass Palace

You get the idea - I am reading the Land of the Green Ghosts and don't think I'll finish it before our trip. Same goes for Jeane, my wife who is reading Saving the Fish. Should we save the books for when we return?

why not bring a few books on capitalism or the citibank annual report or jack welch's books...we all would visit you in jail from time to time..

I was reading Letters from Burma - by Auang San Suu Kyi when i was there 5 years ago and our guide suggusted to put it in my suitcase when at the airports. You should be fine.

Never did i feel unsafe as a tourist.

Have a great trip- the people are truly gentle, kind and friendly.

Those are all excellent books (Saving Fish from Drowning is the title of the first). I wouldn't flaunt the books, by say, having them in your hand as you go through immigration or customs, but you should have no problems. It's the Burmese people they don't want to have the books.

Why not 'lose' the books there. I had a wonderful guide with a very good university education and English - and someone like that would like to have a book unobtainable there. It is the only way they will ever see them!

I would read the books but not in Burma.I would also not give them to anyone as you could possibly get them in trouble.

Giving those books to someone in Burma could land them in prison.

They are pretty heavy books Craig!! Why not take some other books in to read and leave them with a guide or other people you meet whereby they don't risk getting into trouble- they will appreciate it!

I think I wrote before we also took in magazines, reading glasses, a dictionary and even a Sudoku book which were all welcomed!!

On the subject of gifts I also gave some lipstick to the girl who helped us with our booking of a taxi at our hotel and to the lady of the family who helped us locate relatives. They seemed to be especially delighted!!

Thanks for all of your replies. We will leave the books at home. I'll finish Land of the Green Ghosts when I return - its a good read - difficult to put down. I've read all the other books I mentioned. Jeane seems more interested in reading photography books while she's in Burma so it won't be a problem.

Bob, in spite of the fact that the Citigroup annual report is riveting, I will leave it home too. Perhaps I should bring some of Donald Trump's books - just what the Burmese need...ha ha.

I will be thinking of you the next few weeks and reminiscing about all those time warp times and lovely gentle people.
