Bride and Prejudice

I saw Bride and Prejudice this weekend. Gurinder Chadha's Bollywood crossover update of the Jane Austin novel staring Aishwarya Rai.

The movie was corny, but the scenery in India and London was beautiful. The costumes were brilliant and the music fun (though not as energetic as the Bombay Dreams stage show).

Yes, even I enjoyed the settings more than the story line. Also, as someone who has seen many Ash rai movies I did not think she even looked her best so little eye candy as well!

Keith:

B&P does not come anywhere near her previous hit 'bend it like beckham".

Another "masala" attempt to showcase India, though the movie sucks. Ash is as beautiful as she looked on 60minutes & the D.Letterman show.

But I found many Indian faces in India to be as beautiful. Sadly only a few hit stardom to get noticed!

Just did a search to see if this movie had been discussed here. I recently saw it on video and really loved it. I had never seen a Bolly-wood film before and got such a kick out of the "no kiss" rule! The colors in this film are gorgeous, as are the people.

So, here's my stupid question of the day. Realizing that American musicals really have no resemblance to American life, and assuming the same applies to this film... How closely does this film represent the Indian family and socio-economics? The family was called "middle-class" in the reviews, but the home, housekeeper, clothes, travel, etc seemed quite lovely and extravagant. Just wondering.

I would appreciate any comments/insight. THanks in advance!

Dreamer 2, this is definitely not middle class life in India tho the reality of parents with many daughters being very eager to see them married is true!
