Boston GTG

The Hub is alive with the prospects of the upcoming GTG and the anticipated lively exchanges. Bob has promised to wear shorts and a tank top, regardless of the weather. I will run a special and only charge 95% of my normal hourly rate. Carol has promised to bring an "E" and teach us to play pool. Bob, that's play pool not lounge around pool. Having read recent posts, Bob's after lunch tour may include some of the beautiful beaches of New England. Go Red Sox.

Craig Oct 4th, 2005 12:24 PM

I understand that if the Red Sox make it to the AL Championship Series, the Saturday game will be postponed on account of the GTG and they will play a day - night doubleheader on Sunday...

rhkkmk Oct 4th, 2005 05:54 PM

we have the promise of a really good turnout for the GTG next week...all are looking forward to it and we especially want to welcome carol and guenmai, both fresh from bkk....but they are not the only recent returnees...

simpsonc510 Oct 4th, 2005 08:45 PM

Bob
Brad should be getting his ticket tomorrow. He really wants to come, now that he could not stay on in BKK for an extra week.

To revive something mentioned a while ago,the Peabody-Essex Museum has a terrific special exhibit of Thai art that continues only through Oct 16. I went there last week, and I enjoyed both the pieces on display and the explanations that provided more than a small amount of insight into Thailand and Buddhism. I found the trip to be well worth a visit, and I'm not much of a museum-goer.

The Peabody-Essex Museum is in Salem (MA), about 15 miles north of Boston. Salem is a historic town and a terrific place to spend part of a day.

Gpanda Oct 5th, 2005 09:52 AM

I work in Salem. The PEM is a super way to spend a relaxed afternoon. It evokes the sailing glory of Salem. For GTGers', it would be a good place to go in the afternoon IF the weather is nice. If not, the drive up from Cambridge will not be fun.

Carol, Bob has correctly noted the obscure reference. Looking forward to meeting you and Brad.

rhkkmk Oct 5th, 2005 09:54 AM

just a reminder to all attending the GTG to bring 1 or 2 items from your travels for display....

looking forward to seeing everyone..!!

bob and andy

Gpanda Oct 5th, 2005 10:36 AM

Great. I now have Bob signing my name to his posts. As if I don't have enough enemies?

emd Oct 5th, 2005 11:15 AM

I am much too busy obsessively planning my next trip to Japan to come to Boston. Plus, must watch the Red Sox (what do you mean "IF they make it into the AL Champooinship Series"??) at home as my husband will be horrible company if they lose.

Seriously, I wish you all a great time. My father's great grandfather was the fire chief of Boston for years, so if you all really raise heck and start some fires tell current Chief Campbell that former-Chief Sennott's great grandson's wife, emd, said to put them out for you.

simpsonc510 Oct 5th, 2005 02:21 PM

It's official. Son now has his plane ticket. WE shall both see you in BOS.

Hope the GTG goes really well - I'm sure that you will all have a seriously good time.

Regards from Mary

Lyndie Oct 5th, 2005 06:14 PM

Airfreighting a case of 1990 Penfolds Grange today. Hope it arrives before the GTG, otherwise you all can eat cake & drink tea! (How awful!) Seriously have a fab GTG! Wish Boston wasn't so far away!

rhkkmk Oct 5th, 2005 06:50 PM

andy---suggest you check your bank statement next month as fodor posts are not the only thing i have been signing...

lyndie---come and bring the wine...loads of back packer places to stay here...

Lyndie Oct 5th, 2005 09:52 PM

Bob, you're a sharp as a razor blade, today! Have a lot of fun & remember to do everything in moderation, including using poor old Gpanda's credit card! With friends like you, who needs enemies? ha ha ha ha ha!

laurieco Oct 6th, 2005 02:17 AM

I'm sorry I won't be bringing any leeches to the GTG, never saw one. If I happen to see some while here in KL, will pack them up. Looking forward to seeing you all.

rhkkmk Oct 6th, 2005 06:06 AM

no leeches!!!!!!!!! you have ruined my day....what are you going to do with those expensive socks???? sell them on e-bay?? eric told you that you were crazy to buy them didn't he???

Craig Oct 6th, 2005 06:12 AM

Maybe Laurie can bring the socks to the GTG for the display...

glorialf Oct 6th, 2005 06:33 AM

Wish I could come but just can't this time. Have a fabulous time. I'd really like to think about having a GTG in Chicago -- but not in winter.

Guenmai Oct 6th, 2005 06:46 AM

Gloria-A GTG in Chicago would be great...before Lord and Taylor's ends up Macy's! Ha...Ha...Ha...Happy Travels!

Gpanda Oct 6th, 2005 07:16 AM

Lyndie-"poor OLD Gpanda"? I'm stricken. While youth is but a distant memory, I choose to think of myself as middle-age. Bob on the other hand is definitely OLD.

tanuki Oct 6th, 2005 02:45 PM

Some of you might enjoy dining at the Elephant Walk restaurant on Beacon Street, which is one of my favorites, while you are there. It has wonderful, authentic Cambodian/French cuisine.

gpanda
I don't know if my message to you ever showed up here, or if it was one of many that got "lost In cyberspace" rather than "found" here on the forum!! ARRRGGHHH

Anyway, the good folks at the cigar shop at Gaysorn said that they remember you!!!

Carol

rhkkmk Oct 6th, 2005 07:44 PM

carol---don't humor him...he is impossible already...and yes i am old and he forgot to add FAT....

carol...remember to bring straw to feed to gpanda in his cage...or maybe we will just feed him the leech socks...or stuff them in his mouth to keep him quiet...

laurieco Oct 7th, 2005 12:05 AM

Yes, Eric did tell me I was crazy and he did not buy a pair (though he did by the waterproof socks but he can wear them shovelling snow). I bought a pair in Sandakan but they were cheap.

Do I need to wash them before we stuff them into Gpanda's mouth?

rhkkmk Oct 7th, 2005 06:12 AM

better if they are dirty...he will appreciate it more...he is from cambridge and they never wash anything or shave their legs either...

tanuki Oct 7th, 2005 03:53 PM

Did you see the feature on Salem on the fodor's home page?
http://www.fodors.com/wire/archives/001294.cfm

Gpanda Oct 7th, 2005 04:58 PM

It's a well-known fact that Pandas are loaded with Socks appeal. Typical banker. He doesn't know that straw is used for bedding and Hay is what is properly fed to Pandas. This may explain some of his restaurant recommendations.

Gpanda Oct 7th, 2005 05:16 PM

Tanuki-just looked at the site. It's the normal ridiculous tourist kitsch. Salem is the worst tought out tourist destination I have ever seen. I work there. It's beautiful, but there is no there there. The several ridiculous "museums" cater to the witch nonsense. the "Shoppes" have low rent occult items. There is no good place to stroll. This is managed by the town "fathers" even though the harbor is scenic, the Peabody essex Museum is first rate, there are two historic districts and the town has an international reputation. It's staggering how mismanaged it is. Every day, I see befuddled tourists wandering the streets. I know they're trying to get a sense of the central sights, but there is little help. American Ingenuity at its worst.

simpsonc510 Oct 9th, 2005 07:08 AM

I wanted to top this for MHRS. Maybe she will decide to join us!
