Re Borobdur, it's worth a reasonable part of a day, it's interesting. Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Malang, Mt Bromo are also places to go but the thing with Java is that there aren't that many places where you would find special tourist moments, if that's what you are looking for, apart from the usual mentions.

Some people might not agree with me on my next recommendations, but may i suggest doing a railway trip around Java if you have the time, and going to the old port of Batsvis in Jakarta, because it is very interesting if you are at all interested in seafaring and maritime trade.

Java is a bit of an acquired taste, not really as welcoming/friendly as places like Bali and some of the eastern and northern provinces.

We spend quite a bit of time there because our daughter-in-law is Indonesian from manado with family in Jakarta and Bali.

the other thing I would add is that outside of Bali, the Indonesian government is going to restrict alcohol sales from convenience stores later this year.

Hi all,

Related to alcoholic drink, it's a bit harder to get it in whole Indonesia. Thanks to the some organizations that sounds loudly while Jakarta's governor said alcoholic drink was legal, it has affected all markets in Indonesia I guess. It was a polemic, grain pros and cons. So I think just be prepared that you would (probably) get a hard time to find alcoholic drink.

There's beer in supermarket (Heineken), but I'm not really sure about minimarket in Jogjakarta especially around Borobudur and hotel, and I tasted the beer in Indonesia was quite different with the same brand in Europe. Was it just my feeling or anyone tasted same?

I don't know if there's any in Jogjakarta, but in villages and even (sometimes) in Jakarta or Bandung, you can easily find "oplos" drink. They said it is same as alcoholic drink, able to make you drunk. But "oplos" is made from different things, contains detergent, soap, oil, any poisons. So, be careful and be selective.

Wish you a pleasant journey to Indonesia!

Marmot - many thanks for your continuing suggestions. I have passed them onto my wife for further investigation. Somewhat bizarrely we stayed at Alam Sari the last time we were in Bali - clearly we have the same tastes! As we are on a very long trip, I am not sure it is within our price band this time but who knows?

We have had good experiences with Airbnb in South America so will have a look for Bali but still not sure how long we will be in Bali at yeh end of our first month in Indonesia.

mareeS55 - thank you for your input and suggestions. In addition to the usual "must see" sights we are quite content just to wander and see what we find along the way. For us it is as much about the journey as the destination. It was already in our plan to travel through Java by train wherever possible. Unfortunately the agents I am trying to book tickets through do not seem to want to reply so I will probably have to wing it and just turn up at stations to buy tickets!

Elrealblancos - thanks for the warnings re oplos - sounds delightful but I think I will give it a miss and stick to the odd Bintang if I can find one.

On the matter of alcohol, I had read that the government had already introduced the ban on sales in convenience stores - can't seem to find the link on travelfish anymore.
