Book Recommendation - One Thousand Secret Suns
by Khaled Hosseini
I just finished this book and have to say it is just excellent. Although it is not a happy story, it is elegantly written...I couldn't put it down. |
Wrong title...One thousand SPLENDID suns.
|
For those unfamiliar, Hosseini is the Author of The Kite Runner.
My wife is currently reading it - I get to read it next... |
I was a bit disappointed in this but that may have been because I loved kite Runner so much. While I enjoyed this book and literally read it in one day I didn't feel I learned as much as I did with Kite Runner. That may be because I actually know something about the history since I read a lot of history when I went to the pakistan/afganistan border in 1995 (we only went to the kyber pass but spent almost 10 days on the border area).

I think it would have been hard for Hosseini to match the depth and breadth of the Kite Runner -- Splendid Suns showed signs typical of second novels written by authors who put so much into their first, don't you think? I thought he really did an admirable job of crawling inside his female characters for Suns.
The Kite Runner has been made into a film -- can only hope they did it justice. |
Well, I didn't read the Kite Runner (but will now). I loved the SPlendid Suns though...I thought the characters were real and the story well spun and the writing very, very good. It's been a long time since I've found a book to hold my attention...and this one did.

I loved both his books. Great characters, both beautifully written, and incredible stories.
|
Absolutely loved Kite Runner, found Splendid Suns tiresome and disappointing.
Kite Runner is coming out as a film in December (just delayed this week due to Paramount working on moving out the families of the Afghanistan young actors who they feel may be in danger--NY Times story today--rape scene is an issue even though nothing is explicit). I cannot envision Splendid Suns being a movie. |
