I'm well aware of the specifics of the Marriot bomb and all the others. In fact I know two people who were in the lobby at the time. Blessedly, both survived, but others didn't. Since that event, the major hotels have set up security measures that would not allow carbombs to get close to the buildings. So you are reasonably safe once you're in the hotel. Getting there is another issue.

My point is that it's an individual decision whether or not to vacation or travel on business to a place that has been attacked by terrorists. I worry about Jakarta, I worry about Bali, but I also worry about New York, Rome, London and just about every major city in the world. When I travel I consider the risks. I take reasonable precautions. I accept that the decision to travel or not is mine alone.

I went to Bali right after the Kuta bombing, and then last month. No problem at all. For one thing Bali is not Jakarta. I will not go to Jakarta or some other parts of Indonesia, but Bali is perfectly fine. Second - after the trouble is the safest time to travel because security is tighter. Better beach hotels in Bali now have gates and guards. I flew right after 9/11 on the theory that airport security would be better, and I was right. I was in Peru right after the guerrila attack of the tourist train also. Again no problem. I could see security guards on train stations for Machu Picchu. Both in Peru and Bali, we were treated royally because tourism was down drastically, and locals couldn't have been nicer. The only draw back was I didn't have the heart to bargain as hard because I know their business was bad, so I'm sure I paid too much for my purchases. European tourists were back in full force in Bali last month. Americans were the only ones missing there. Balinese are peace loving Hindus, so don't confuse them with Javanese who are Muslems. Go to Bali. You'll be safer there than in Manhattan or for me California. You'll love the beautiful island and its people.
