BKK Harmonique closed until May 1
I'm so sad, as I've read from so many of you that it is fabulous. Ate tonight at Supatra River House instead. I was sadly disappointed. Too much food, expensive, and none of it as wonderful as the street food at Chatuchak market this morning. The boat transport from the hotel was nice, though. Trip report will come later - only on day 3 so far!
I have a question, though - Does anyone have Chote Citr address? The concierge said "oh, this very hard for taxi driver to find" like that would stop me. Must be no kickback there. |
Addresses are more or less pointless in Bangkok. If you don't have the directions in Thai, a taxi driver can't find it. Even then, Chote Chitr is hard to find, as it's just a hole in the wall along with several other holes.
Do it this way: Take a taxi to Wat Suthat / the Giant Swing. Standing in front of the temple, facing the swing, turn left and walk down Bamrung Muang road. A very long block down, you'll come to a large intersection with Fuang Nakhon Road. Turn right. A short ways up on your left is a side street (look for a shoe store on the corner) where you'll find Chote Chitr a few doors down. |
You should look past tourist restaurants like Harmonique and eat real Thai food.
|
Try Tongue Thai, near the Oriental Hotel or Gallery Cafe, near the Royal Orchid Sheraton. Both are very good and similarly priced to Harmonique.

yeah Mango7 is a big an of MBK"!!!!!!!!!!

Do a search for Chote Chitr here. I have written walking instructions on how to get there from a nearby Wat Suthat and have posted them here several times. Michael's instruction are correct, but not as detailed as you'll need. The first time I went to CC, I had the concierge write out the address and the instructions given by the owner in Thai and it still took us an hour to find it even with the help of many kind Thais. We've been back a couple of times since. Once you find it, it's not hard to find again.
The address is sort of worthless, as the street it is on is unmarked - no street sign, and even people a block away don't know that's the name of the street. Your concierge is right - I've never heard of anyone who found a taxi driver who could find the place. |
Smeagol. Did you mean a big "ass" of MBK? roffle :)
|
Mango, please keep notes on your upcoming visit to BKK. I am really interested in where you and Mrs. Mango eat. Give us some directions to the specific stalls or holes in the walls that you haunt. We are seriously interested for our upcoming trip back to Bangkok in 2010. We have tried the Harmoniques' and TT's and are ready for some real street food that has already been tested before by someone ;)
Aloha! |
Hey HI traveler, will do. I usually don't keep track of restaurants, but this time I'll keep a diary and post here in my jet-lag induced stupor at the end of April. We are going ot try different food-stall markets on this trip. We usually are in Bkk at two parts of the entire trip, but this time we'll be there for a 7.5 day stratch, so lots of gastronomical adventures!! Its funny, it hit me with surprise today that I'll be there soon. The past 6 months just flew by..I remember thinking "Geez, this is going to take forever" and then boom!
Any other requests from anyone else, please let me know! :D |
Harmonique was a possible option for our short stay in Bangkok in a couple of weeks - thanks for letting us know that it's closed for a while. I think we'll do either Tongue Thai or head towards the Sukhumvit area if we have time.
|
I must say I'm a big "an" of MBK, too. It was amazing! I can't imagine keeping track of the street food stalls - how do you describe the little lady at the satay stand at Chatuchak? Or how to find that darned samosa stand? Still, it was good to try the "nice" restaurant, if only to show us what we don't need to do any more.
I'll find the detailed directions to CC. My deep thanks to all of you who have been so helpful in our planning. I hope to provide something meaningful for the novice when I report. |
