Bangkok will be much less expensive for eyeglasses than Hong Kong.

I almost hesitate to step into the tank top issue here. I respect the input of both Mari and Bisbee, and expect that what both are reporting is accurate. In my experience, you would better off not wearing tank tops. I remember sitting in a cafe in Hanoi. There was a European woman wearing a strappy tank top (skimpier than most tank tops) and all the Vietnamese were staring at her. She looked very uncomfortable.

I am guessing that the different experiences of Mari and Bisbee's wife has to do with context. A woman weating a tank top with a business suit is different than a tank top worn with very casual clothing, for instance.

Has anyone been out to view the River Kwai? I am concerned about the time, a full day, the tour will take and cut my shopping short. Is it worth the trip and time? We very much want to go to River Kwai, but hate to be disappointed.

There are dozens of posts about visiting the River Kwai. Do a search. Also, when you want to ask a different question, post a new question rather than adding to a thread that is an unrelated topic.

Shorts are not appropriate for the city of Hanoi, especially if you plan on visiting the temples and I didn't see anyone wearing shorts in Hong Kong.

Wow, I didn't mean to stir up a hornet's nest! I don't wear tank tops and shorts, but I do wear sleevless or cap sleeve shirts and capris (below th knee) I assume those will be fine. Shopping in HongKong, I suggest Rio Pearl for jewlery and Prinction Tailors for men's clothing. Does anyone have trustworthy jewlery store in BKK?
