better to stay in akasaka or asakusa

Hi, I will be travelling to Tokyo in 6 weeks. I'm just wondering which area would be better to stay in. Like, for strolling around the hotel, would there be more shops and restaurants in one place, as opposed to the other? The 2 places I am considering are Toyoku Inn Senzoku in Asakusa, and Marroad Inn in Asakaka. Thanks for any help.

Hi

My wife and I stayed in Akasaka and we found that to be quite nice. It was very easy to get around by using the metro and it only took a few minutes to get to places like Ginza, Shinjuku and Shibuya. I have posted a trip report with some pictures and links on my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com/japan_tokyo.htm . Maybe you can find some useful info there.

Can't to generalize but :

Akasaka : more modern area of Tokyo, skyscrapers, expensive bars, clubs and restaurants, TV Station (TBS). As prices tend to be higher here, generally speaking this is not an area for the youth. More for business oriented people.
Subway station 6 minute walk from Marroad Inn.

Asakusa : has more traditional Tokyo feel to it with low buildings and temples. Less expensive choice in dinning and shopping. Disadvantage with Tokyu Inn Senzoku is 12 min walk to the nearest subway station according to their site.

As an area to stay I would pick Asakusa over Akasaka but would probably try to find a place closer to the subway station.

We liked Ryokan Shigetsu in Asakusa. They also have western style rooms available. The ryokan has a website and there's also info at www.japaneseguesthouses.com if you're at all interested in something a bit different.
