Best steakhouse in Bangkok?
 

I took my family for an American steak dinner at the New York Steakhouse in the JW Marriott Hotel on Sukhumvit based on recommendations and reviews. We ordered two rib-eyes and one filet mignon. All three arived cool. One of the "rib-eyes" was not a rib-eye and the filet was not American beef- it had the typical "gaminess" and toughness of Australian or French beef. One order of asparagus was not cooked- it bordered on raw and cool to the touch. Steak fries, onion rings and spinach were passable but no better than I can get at dozens of less pretentious restaurants. I would not recommend this resto, full stop. Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere, even a chain steakhouse, and get something either on par or better and maybe without the mossies. Don't be fooled by the smoke and mirrors and fancy write-ups. My wife's legs were assailed by mosquitos throughout. Staff explained that it was a problem but they couldn't do anything about it. Chevy Chase could really make a good flic out of this evening- I was thinking "The Griswolds do Bangkok". Can anyone recommend an outstanding steakhouse where the food bears some semblance to published reviews. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

May I thoroughly recommend the steak restaurant in the Millennium Hilton called Prime.

We ate there during our stay in Bangkok in late December last year and have to say it was absolutely excellent. It was busy, but the service was very friendly and efficient.

I didn't have a starter but OH had a pumpkin and lobster soup, fantastic. We then both had filet mignon, both cooked to absolute perfection and hot! There was a choice between Australian and American beef. Our side orders were spinach and mashed potato and again were perfect. You also get a large hot freshly cooked loaf of bread with flavoured butter.

Our table, with large leather winged chairs was right next to the window, which gave had a wonderful view of the river.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant, for us it was a fabulous evening and will remain in our memory for a long time!

I've eaten at the New York Steakhouse a few times and I've never had any problem with the mosquitoes there. The restaurant is set well inside the air conditioned JW Marriott hotel and I have never heard of a mosi problem there.

Sorry that your meal was not as you've expected but if you ordered a rib eye and you got something else why didn't you send it back? I'm curious as I've only had good experiences at the New York Steakhouse.

can't imagine a bug problem in the JW, but i would have taken my complaint higer in the hotel administration if that were the case and i know the prices you paid there...

i am told that the steakhouse in the lower level of the intercontinental hotel is excellent....brazilian...

What part of the mosquito does the steak come from? Typical Marriott cost cutting.

The best steak I've had in Bangkok was at the Fireplace Grill at the Intercontinental. I'm not sure if its still open.

Bangkok is not a good place to try to get a steak. Wait until you get back home, then go to a Ruth's Chris, Morton's, Sullivan's, or Del Frisco's.

Most beef comes from Australian with some from Argentina. These do taste differently from the beef in north america. As BradinBangkok says wait until you get home to get a steak that tastes to your liking. The following places serve a fair steak at a reasonable price

Neil's Tavern around the corner from the American embassy off wireless road. Serves US prime rib eye but it still taste a shade different.

Angus Steak House(at Thaniya Road)in the Silom area

Outback steak house in Siam Discovery center. Surprisingly the food is excellent and the staff are really friendly.

Thanks to all for the helpful responses. I will try Prime, Fireplace Grill in the basement of the Intercontinental (I just checked and it is still there), Neils, the Angus and the Outback. I didn't send the lot back because of a number of circumstances that mitigated against makng a fuss. Sometimes it is just like that and you have to bite the bullet.
