Best SE Asia Destination for Older Travelers?
Hi Fodor-ites,
I'm currently planning an Asian trip for myself, my new wife, and her parents. We are going to spend some time in Okinawa (where her mother is from), and her parents have expressed interest in visiting another SE Asian destination while we are in the region.
However, I'm struggling to find a good destination for them...and us. They want a city/country with relatively good tourist infrastructure - they want to stay in "nice" hotels, go on tours, etc. Thus, I think they would prefer a place like Singapore. My wife and I demand a little bit more adventure.....for example, I would love to visit Vietnam. But does Vietnam have enough of a tourist infrastructure to make them comfortable?
Any suggestions? I've been to Thailand before, so I'd like to avoid going again. All other destinations are in-play....
Thanks!

I'd recommend Bali. It has excellent tourist infrastructure and it has plenty of things to do - both sightseeing and activities.
I'm not sure VN has enough good infrastructure for your inlaws - it's still a bit rough around the edges.
And I don't think Singapore has enough variety for you. I always enjoy visiting Singapore, but I'm not sure it's what you want given the information you provided.
Malaysia also has excellent tourist infrastructure. There are lots of options of places to go in Malaysia, you'd need to give us more info about your interests for us to make recommendations.
As you know, Thailand has excellent tourist infrastructure. You might consider visiting Thailand and going to places you haven't been before.

I recommend that you stay in the same country: Japan.
A trip to Okinawa likely means traveling through Tokyo. It would be possible to get a ticket to Okinawa with an enroute stopover in Japan.
Another way to travel would be to get a roundtrip ticket from home to Tokyo or Osaka. Maybe fly into Tokyo and return from Osaka after visiting Kyoto.
To add Okinawa to the itinerary you could get a special fare for visitors offered by both ANA and JAL. It would cost only about $220 or so to fly from Tokyo to Okinawa and return to either Tokyo or Osaka.
There are some good fares being advertised now by jtbusa.com For example $777 roundtrip on Continental. Or business class on American Airlines.
Japan, of course, has an excellent tourist infrastructure.
Hong Kong would also be a good choice because it could be enroute to your primary destination. Meets all of your qualifications.

Johnnyman7,
Are your in-laws Japanese? If so, they might enjoy Taiwan. Relatively short flying distance, good food, seemingly popular destination for Japanese (less language barrier?)
HK or S'pore also makes sense if they enjoy shopping and dining. Bali is popular, but a longer flight distance. There are lots of "nice" hotels in all three destinations.
