best options for cell phone in Vietnam and Thailand

What is the best option to keep in touch with US while in Thailand and Vietnam?

Well, as far as Thailand, your hotel might provide a cell phone to you with free, unlimited calls to the U.S. That's what the Anantara Siam does in Bangkok as I stayed there last month. So, while considering hotels, maybe you should e-mail and ask if a cell phone is provided.

I have an old cell phone, Motorola flip phone, that I bought in Bangkok, over a decade ago, and take it with me each year although I don't always go to 7-11 to buy a SIM card for it since now I travel with my small, MacBook Air and keep in contact that way. But, that free cell phone, that the Anantara Siam provided, really came in handy as I could call my mom and chat with her.

Now, in Thailand one needs to provide a passport number to get a cell phone set up there as my best, Thai friend was telling me. I didn't feel like doing that, while there, so I just used e-mail and then while at the Anantara Siam, used the free cell phone that was already set up.

Happy Travels!

Check with your cell service provider on their international plans. Most are pricey, but Team Mobile offers free data in over 200 countries.

If you have an unlocked phone, you can get a SIM from lots of places. Typically, they will install it for you. As per Guenmai's post, you will need to provide your passport number.
