The JW Marriott on Mai Kao beach in Phuket would fit everything on your list except that it s not located in or near Patong, the main town. The hotel opened about a year ago, and is the first new hotel on then island in 10 years, so have all the latest facilities. It is about 20 minutes north of the airport. The hotel is trying to establish a customer base and is offering very good prices, and people on this site have mentioned seeing really low prices on Priceline (like under $50 per night), run a search. This is a very kid-friendly hotel, with a two pool, including a large pool with a kids area. They have a kids camp. There is a turtle preserve next store which you can visit. They are on a very pretty beach, with no other hotels in the area so you get a real feeling of privacy. (Surf is rough as noted below.) They have a great spa, nice health club and tennis courts. The hotel is near the Blue Canyon Golf Club, the best course on the island (IMHO), and you can get playing privileges. The rooms are a good size with nice Thaoi-inspired furniture and large bathrooms with big bathtubs. The rooms have a queen or king bed, no double doubles (i.e., two double beds) as I recall, but each room as an indoor "lanai" platform at the window with two futons that children could easily sleep on. There are also 2-bedroom villas with kitchens which might be a good option for a family. (The villas are part of the timeshare portion of the resort, but can be rented if available. The timeshare is called Marriott's Phuket Beach Club.) If you have Marriott Rewards points, you can use them at the hotel or the timeshare Drawbacks are location (north of the airport and bit out of the action), and the surf on the beach is quite rough, I would not let young children swim in the ocean. Check out both hotel and time share at Marriott.com.

Run a search here for past threads on other hotel choices in Phuket. I also like the Sheraton a lot, but I am not sure you could get it for under $100. It also is not really near Patong. (I am not a fan of Patong anyway, so that is not a drawback in my mind.)
WE stayed at the Dusit in the Laguna Beach Complex. We found this hotel to be cozier than the Sheraton next door. All the beach in this complex is wonderful. In fact now, we are thinking of buying a condo here, we enjoyed it so much. Myszka

Why do you want to be close to Phuket Town? Not much there, other side of the island from the tourist and beach resorts/towns. Marriott is north of the airport and miles from anywhere. If you want a busy resort and a good place with kids you can't beat the Holiday Inn at Patong Beach, also the Club Andaman is good value, for a bargain try Coconut Village, nice a/con rooms, close to beach, about $25 a night.

http://www.phuket-hotels.s5.com

We loved Pearl Village Hotel. I wouldn't stay directly in the town either. It was around $105/night when we were there. They seemed to have apt like rooms too which may work for 6 adults & 2 kids. Beach is pretty but seems to have tar slicks under the sand (if you go in the water). Pools are great.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn two years ago. My wife wasn't too thrilled when I told her I had booked a Holiday Inn, but she loved the place. It is definitely a family oriented hotel, across the street from Patong Beach (always on Travel Channel's top 10 beaches), is well below $100 - we paid approx $55 and that included breakfast buffet, believe they have an on-site spa, and it is right in Phuket Town. Being right in town means that it is very touristy and busy, which bothered me somewhat but my wife liked it.

Holiday Inn Phutet is in Patong Beach not Phuket Town, Phuket Town is on the other side of the island. It's a good hotel, well managed, you could try Coconut Village, about USD 25 a night twin, not as classy but a decent 3-star.

I think Dusit Laguna is really the best choice for families because there are lots of activities. When I stayed there, the hotel was never noisy and the bathroom was huge.
