jacobi,maytraveler,jc223, and all:

For all of you who have mentioned JadeLeo...we were among the first to recommend him and his group. They were punctual, informative, polite, caring and a helluva lot of fun. It was like traveling with favorite family folk. In four days , we covered Guilin, Yangshuo, the terraced rice fields, etc.

Here are some pics:

I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Guilin. It was OK. It was nice to be across the street from the public park.

The Sheraton is the best hotel in Guilin. Nixon stayed there.

I didn't like Yangsho at all, but the Li River cruise was fantastic.

I've read the previous reviews and I have to say that I disagreed with some of the content. Yes, the Li River Retreat is high up in the mountains, with about a half an hour uphill hike the entire way from town. Please note that no cars, motorbikes, etc. can take you to and from the resort between approx. 10:00AM and 4:00PM because of the outdoor market lining the road. At night you have to take a motorbike taxi in order to go up because there are no streetlights. Be prepared to get ripped off initially therefore ask around for prices, transportation is in abundance. The rooms are clean and spacious with beautiful views of the river and the menu was expansive was very good.
The staff on the other hand was an entirely different story. Although I am pretty fluent in Chinese, I'm more comfortable in speaking in English, and the girls (and I do emphasize girls here) were friendly at initial contact but when they could not find my reservation, they started talking about me in Chinese saying that I didn't know what I was talking about and other things of that nature. A person that didn't understand the language would not have picked up on the insults because when speaking in English they were smiling, In addition, when I sat down to wait for my room to be prepared, I ordered food and sat at the coffee table which they were unhappy about and said so in Chinese. I distinctly had an impression that I was back in high school with the gossiping, back talking, giggling and overall inexperience of the staff. I had them talk to my travel agent who was given a confirmation of my room by the Li River Retreat and after speaking and getting into an argument with my travel agent, they were able to obtain a room for me, although quoting it at a hundred rmb higher than what their confirmation to my travel agent was. By this time I was exhausted and happy that I at least had a room so I agreed to the set fees. I also arranged a Li River boatride tour and transportation.. Going into town I dropped by another tour agency and they're prices were about half the amount. I booked a trip to the Silver Cave with the said agency, Yangshuo Rainbow Travel Service through Anan Chen. I then went back up to my hotel to inquire about the price of the Li River Tour because it was the exact same accomodations and method of transport. The girl at the front desk pointed to the river path to make sure that we were talking about the same thing, she then shuffled a bunch of papers and then said that she mistakenly booked a longer trip for me and therefore was twice the price (although pointing out the exact path of my tour only minutes before). By this time I was suspect of their actions and wanted to confirm my Silver Cave purchase from the Rainbow Travel Service. They not only quoted me a higher price, but they reasoned it by saying that the transportation would take an hour and a half to the Caves, realistically it took a half an hour. In asking them more information about the sites in Yangshuo they proceeded to spit out random times and amounts that did not coorelate with the quotes and actual times that the other travel agent indicated. This is a major faux pas in my opinion because the front desk staff is supposed to be knowledgeable about the surrounding areas and provide you with accurate information, else they are completely useless. Upon leaving there was discrepancy about the bill, although by this time I was almost expecting something of that nature to happen, not only did they talk negative about me in Chinese again, they indicated their relief of my depart by not even looking at me much less sputter out a goodbye. I would not recommend this hotel based on the inaccuracy and deceptive nature of the front desk adolescents. This is a backpackers town, and there are a number of hotels that would be able to provide simple clean lodging and I recommend you go elsewhere, another hotel that seemed nice although I directly research was the Paradise Yangshuo Resort. Btw, I noticed that all the guests were Westerners, therefore please do not support their business in ripping off individuals that are not entirely knowledgeable of the area and the language.

Hi, I have just stayed at the Sheraton in Guilin and it was everything I expected it to be. A nice, well managed hotel with good service. There were many tour groups but overall it was a good experience. The cruise down to Yangshuo was also delightful

I am now staying at the Li River Retreat and this is something that is hard to describe how special it is

Firstly, their online reservation system is so simple to use and they gave us so much information on how to get from the boat to the Retreat. We knew we had to wait till 4pm before the road was clear before getting to the hotel. They arranged a car to takes us to the hotel just after 4 so we just strolled around Yangshuo for a while

The reception staff are so nice. They helped with our luggage on arrival and made us feel very welcome. We booked a deluxe standard room on the 2nd floor and the view from the balcony is 5 star. The rooms are large and we have two beds. We only used the queen size double bed but I can see their logic by having two beds, just incase two people who are not a couple can also use the room. The bathroom is also large and the shower cubicle is very convenient. I prefer these rooms over the ones at the Sheraton

We have hired bikes each day at 20 Yuan per day and although we have got lost each day, we still have had some great experiences in the countryside. We also use the bikes to go into Yangshuo and to come back each afternoon. We always eat here, the food is soooo nice. I wish I could stay here longer

Next stop is Kunming

What do you mean by this? I'm booked at the Li River Retreat for October 2008 and am looking forward to staying there and enjoying the views from the 2nd floor balcony!

Hi Monica,

when we booked the room we asked them about how we would find the Retreat from the place the boats stop and they explained about the road during the time the boats are arriving. The information on their website is very clear and their map is very detailed

This is the page you should look at
http://www.li-river-retreat.com/Li-R...at-Arrival.htm

We thought it was very informative and clear

Two things. We also used jade Leo in early June as recommended by this forum. He does try really hard and did not pressure us to buy into any addtional tours through him. He brought us all the way to our lovely hotel called the Yangshuo Mountain retreat. I can't believe no one elese has mentioned it here. What a paradise. The staff was amazing especially Angel. She sat with me one evening and told me her amazing story. She was always ready to answer my questions. I even had our taxi driver call her once when there was a situation that couldn't seem to be resolved. The food was great also. We spent one night in Yanshuo and was soooo glad we did not stay in that crowded city. Try to go to market day in the fishing village. It's amazing and authentic! The only thing about Jade and I hate to say this because he was so nice and maybe we were tired but understanding him did take some work. nice man though.

You can choose one or two nights in Guilin , then move to Yangshuo hotel which is more convenient for scenic spots.

Enjoy!
