Best beach destinations from Hong Kong
HI. I'm looking to go to Hong Kong the first week of May to visit a friend over 2 weeks, but I'd like to do a 4/5 day trip on my own in the middle whilst she's at work to do some gorgeous beaches. Where would the most convenient places be travelwise and also weather wise? Will it be nice in Phuket? I've never been to this part of the world before so would appreciate all advice. Many thanks!

May is not a good time for Phuket: historically, it gets almost 14 inches of rain in May. And the rain is only peer of the issue: the water will be rough and the beaches likely to be red-flagged.
Koh Samui will have better weather in May, but I expect you are looking fro a place you can fly to non-stop from Hong Kong. (I think you would have to change planes in Bangkok for Koh Samui)
You could also consider a Malaysian beach - it's been years, but we really enjoyed Kuantan. Again, you'd have to change planes, likely in Kuala Lumpur.
There are beaches in VN, but you must pre-arrange a visa. And you'd have to change planes in either Hanoi or HCMC.

You can fly non-stop to Bali from Hong Kong and the weather will be good in May. The beaches, however, are not the blue water/white sand types that you find in Thailand but rather lively, big wave surfing beaches. Still Bali's beaches are beautiful and a lot of fun with many choices in accommodation and sophisticated restaurants and shopping. You could also include time inland in the Ubud area for nature and culture.
The Ubud Food Festival will take place from May 12 to 14. This is a wonderful event featuring chefs and food aficionados from Indonesia, Australia and other parts of southeast Asia. If that doesn't interest you, then avoid Ubud at that time.
