Best Angkor Wat Hotel(s)

My head is spinnning. I've been reading many reviews re hotels in the Siem Reap area for an upcoming trip with my husband. I think that I've narrowed it down to The Royal Angkor Sofitel or the Royal Grand Hotel D'Angkor with the Journeys Within B&B as a dark horse. Le Meridien, Sokha and the Angkor Palace Resort and Spa. Each of the hotels sound like it has some wonderful features but each also seems to have significant drawbacks.

What do all you knowledgeable people on this board think?

What about a small hotel like Hotel De La Paix?

There is also a new place called Heritage Suites Angkor that looks to be quite beautiful.

The Hotel de la Paix has some very good rate packages for summer...we are paying $780 + 12% tax for 6 nights incuding breakfast this August.

Not to make it more confusing, bur we loved L'Residence de Angkor, a Pansea Orient Express Hotel. Lots of natural materials, beautifully constructed so that it apears to be a series of pavillions floating on a pool, lovely people, glorious bathrooms, fantastic food, really pretty and serene pool. Complex is Service level is not ultra luxury (spa services are in your room, room service menu pretty limited), but it was a great experience.

The Hotel de la Paix is the "best" hotel in Siem Reap. The larger hotels cater to tourist groups but the HDLP is more personal. The restaurant is excellent - great buffet breakfast - if you can get a reservation on the swings for dinner, you will have a wonderful time with great food. Do check it out - if a smaller place is your thing, then you will be very satisfied.

The Royal Angkor Sofitel is head and shoulders above the rest. We have stayed there twice, and can't think of any drawbacks. Please elaborate.
If your budget can manage, then book a de-luxe room......fabulous!

I would agree with waynehazle, this is one of my favourite hotels...anywhere. I just can't think of any negatives about this place.

My wife's luggage did not arrive at Siem Reap with us. As you can imagine, she was somewhat stressed!!! The Royal Angkor located it in Bangkok and had it put on the next flight, collected it by taxi, and presented it at our room within a few hours. Just one example of the exceptional service you can expect at this 'Oasis in the jungle'.
A wonderful hotel.....look no further.

It might be helpful for you to read some of the reviews at:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g2...ap-Hotels.html

These have the most recent information. I have not been in Siem Reap since February 2006, for example.

There is a new place, too, Heritage Suites Angkor, that looks very promising.

We loved the Victoria Angkor. Vietnamese owned - Caters more to European travelers than Americans.
An authentic replica of an old-world Indochine inn. Tropical courtyards, fabulous infinity pool, cool bar, great restaurant and probably the best location in SR - right on the park across from the much more formal Grand hotel.

Sofitel is A+++. The spa is first rate. Stayed there in Jan 07.
