Beijing Duck in Beijing
Will be spending 5 days in Beijing next month and I have this huge craving for the best Beijing duck in the city. Can anyone out there help?
I'll talk suggestions for any other outstanding restaurants...cheap or expensive. Thanks! |
Avoid the usual tourist traps of the Quanjude chain. Probably the best duck in Beijing at the moment is at Beijing Dadong Kaoya Dian, Tuanjie Hu Beikou 3, on the east side of East Third Ring Road (north of Tuanjie Hu Park).
The restaurant claims to use a special method to reduce the amount of fat in its birds, although it seems unlikely that duck this flavorful could possibly be good for you. The birds come in either whole (Y98) or half portions (Y49) and are served with a wide assortment of extras (garlic, green onions, radish). An excellent plain broth soup, made from the parts of the duck you don?t eat, is included in the price. The menu, with English and pictures, offers a wide range of other dishes, everything from mustard duck webs, to duck tongue in aspic, and a number of excellent doufu (tofu) dishes with thick, tangy sauces. Every meal comes with a free fruit plate and walnut sago pudding for desert. This is also one of the few restaurants in the city with a non-smoking room. Many thanks for your response. This is where we will eat.

Just returned from Beijing and Beijing Duck. Like many reports we found it disappointing. To say that it is not like at home would be insulting to say the least. But not what we expected.
I don't remember the hotel but we were told it had the best duck in Beijing. The duck arrived whole, was not big for ten of us, and was expertly carved by a chef into small pieces. We were shown how to place duck, dark sauce and finely sliced green onions on buns. It was tasty but not what we expected so put it down to a new experience. As Peter said, it came with other good food for dinner and we had a separate room and had a nice quiet meal together. |
I should have added we also had the choice of a bun or a small crepe-like cover which was quite good.
