Our group of teachers retuned from China last July on a Freeman Foundation Grant. Fun was had by all, but for the novice traveler, there are some precautions you need to take.Th people are friendly, and many speak English, but it's not DisneyWorld, and you need to be prepared to do a lot of walking in hot humid weather. I took hundreds of pictures, using digital and 35mm cameras. Take disposable cameras with flash...if you take a digital camera, remember they burn up batteries quickly. Also, when it rains, most camcorders will be useless. Take snack bars or granola bars for the munchies. DON'T DRINK THE WATER. Many of our group were incapacitated by upset stomachs, and toilet facilities away from major built up areas can be very primitive. Anything boiled, fried, or peeled, is relatively safe, but you should coat your stomach twice a day with Pepto-Bismol, if your doctor recommends it. Merchandise is cheap, but there's a reason...stick to t-shirts, post cards, and other unbreakables, or you'll regret it. I brought home Pepsi cans, tea, Chinese snacks, fans, and lots of pictures. I wish I could have taped some Chinese television...it's really pretty decent, but remember, it is a tool of the government.

Good Luck!
