Beach vs. Angkor Wat
We have the opportunity to extend our Thailand trip and stay at the Novotel in Patong. We would prefer somewhere quiet and are concerned about what we have read about Patong. Thoughts? We could alternatively have 3 days in Angkor Wat. Obviously a very different experience but any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

My two cents:
1. What month are you going? The rainy season in Phuket is roughly late May through the middle of November. I would avoid Phuket at that time.
2. Patong is not really a great choice if you want quiet. It is the main town on the island. I don't think the Novotel is even on the beach, which means you really will be in the middle of town.
3. Finally, the beaches in Phuket itself are pretty but not spectacular. You really need to hire a boat or join a day trip to outlying islands to see the beautiful beaches and get to good snorkelling, as there is little off Phuket itself. With only 3 days, it may not be worth the time and hassle of going to Phuket, and taking day trips. However, 3 days at Ankor Wat would give you ample time to see the temples and surrounding area and would certainly be an unforgettable trip.
I would save Phuket for another trip when you have more time and can stay or spend time in outlying areas.

Angkor Wat and surroundings were among the most exciting and worthwhile sites we've ever visited. Phuket and sailing out of Phuket for several days was nice, comparable to many other beach and sailing areas. In other words, Angkor is a unique experience. Patong will not be.
