Beach Destination
Hi, heading to Thailand in January. My second time and friends first time. Going to Bangkok and Chiang Mai and on fence about which beach. I have been to Koh Phi Phi and loved it but kind of wanting something different. Ko Samui sounds nice but have read different things about weather mid January. Planning to do most of our cultural stuff in Bangkok and Chiang Mai so just looking for gorgeous beach and mellow time. Lots of swimming and snorkeling. Suggestions??? Thanks in advance

Ko Samui's January weather is iffy. Take a look at Ko Lanta, Krabi or Khao Lak, if Phuket does not suit. The weather in all these will e much better.

Also take a look at Ko Racha. We, too, went to Phi Phi last time and loved it but wanted something different this time--and that's where we're headed in a few weeks.
Also look at Ko Lipe (or anything around Tarutao National Park.) Think you'll find what you're describing in all of the above. |
Do look at Phuket. Weather at that time is usually lovely. There are beaches that are quiet and beaches that are quite busy/active. Prices will be at their peak however, since Dec/Jan/Feb rates are higher than, say, September.

I highly recommend Krabi. It's spectacular. Railay in Krabi is definitely not to be missed. It has a good balance with a wide variety of choices for sceneries, geography, and activities.
Also, there are many nearby destinations for snorkeling, climbing, and sightseeing. It was very pleasant even not-so-good visibility during the low season. Have a good time. |
Thanks very much for all the good suggestions. We don't really want Phuket, have been there once and sure the prices will be quite high. Haven't heard of several of the suggested places. Are they difficult to get to? Will look into all you've suggested and undoubtedly come back with more q's. Thanks again!

There's an airport in Krabi, so it's easy. Khao Lak is about an hour north of the Phuket airport, so it's easy as well. Ko Lanta can be more of a challenge. You fly into Krabi.
