Be a Geisha in Kyoto for 1 hour ?

Bonjour to all,

Just an idea of something to do in Kyoto: have your picture taken in a geisha/samurai kimono. There are a number of specialised studios, here is one address I just found (I have not experienced it and have no connection with them - just thought it may make a good souvenir).

Geisha Make Over Studio Shiki
http://www.maiko-henshin.com/html/english.htm

Nothing looks more ridiculous than a caucasian woman dressed as a geisha.

Who said I was Caucasian ? :-)

Anyway, you'd be surprised ... I've attended classes on how to wear a formal kimono and some of the Caucasian and African students were looking rather surprisingly good (I personnaly feel like a duck on a wire ...). I've also seen Americans expats performing noh and kyogen plays (at Kyoto Yakaka jinja during Gion matsuri), and they weren't as ridiculous as you'd expect, although they were wearing kimonos a bit too short for them. To my surprise, even the Japanese public was making rather elogious comments.

Florence,
Nice word, elogious; it certainly doesn't appear in any of my dictionaries.
Would you care to define it for us?

Florence May 29th, 2002 08:25 PM

Bonjour Les,

Sorry, not an English word but French. I wanted to say the Japanese public were lavishing compliments over the actors. Same root as "eulogy" but I didn't take time to check in my dictionnary. Mooshiwake nai (I have no excuse for this terrible blunder) :-)
