Batu Caves: Best way to see 'em

Should we arrange a tour though our hotel (Traders) in Kuala Lumpur?

Or should we plan this in advance through another means/agency?

Definitely want to see them while we're there and not sure of the best way to go about it.

I'd just bargain with a taxi driver for the trip.

We got a bus from Chinatown which dropped us right at the entrance - from memory I think it took around 45 mins. I doubt a tour will add much to your experience. As Kathie says, bargain with a taxi driver to drive you there and wait or get a bus back to the centre.

OMG must you?? we went and we both felt that it really wasn't worth it. Bob told me he drove past it and kept on driving, right move... Muffin got into the shower fully clothed after we had been there due to the smell and presence of monkey pee (bit extreme but he's like that)
We bargained with a taxi driver, took about 40 minutes to get there. (just MHO)

that's right... we hired a taxi to take us there and the site turned me off.... a circus...the vendors etc...go to carlsbad caverns some weekend instead

Carlsbad Caverns? Ew. Good god, is it really that bad?

Wow--okay, I'll reconsider. Any suggestions for a good one-day activity around (outside) of KL? We'll have one day to walk around and see local sights and was hoping for a few hours outside the city to see something different. Melaka seems a bit too far.

I thought Batu Caves were okay. It certainly won't be the high point of your trip but it's interesting enough for a few hours. There really aren't that many sights around KL and it's a fun thing to do. Be prepared to climb a lot of steps though.

Bob was just upset that the caves weren't air-conditioned.

That said, we just got a taxi to take us. You don't want to waste your money (or time) with a tour.

I agree with laurieco - not that bad. I went both ways by bus, but a taxi shouldn't be difficult.

We enjoyed it, and I have a great picture of my daughter with a HUGE yellow snake wrapped around her shoulders. Good exercise, too.
