Would like to see some cultural sites have a trip on the river visit a night market and possibly a floating market and do some clothes shopping.

john---2 days is a very short time in bkk...forget custom clothes...don't know your size but thai clothes are very small....always try on....they are cheap...
i would suggest that you get a driver for your sightseeing...we and others have used ratt....www.ratservice.com...she is fantastic...she will get you around quickly to lots of places and sprinkly shopping in between...there is lots writtne about her on this board...her time fills up quickly so reserve early...she charges 225B per hour in the city...very reasonable...
you could do it all on your own but would waste so much time that you would not see nearly as much...for that reason i think she would be perfect for you...

grand palace is a must
jim thompson house is also a must
a couple of the major wats: arun, po, etc.
suan packard palace
v-mark palace
if you saw these then you would have seen quite a bit

shopping: MBK near to siam center is a 7 story mega store where bargaining is the story...all individual shops in this large store...
street markets along silom, sathorn, sukhumvit, patpong

i do not think you should consider a trip to the floating market--too far too time consuming...

a long boat klong tour would be nice...you can rent the boats from the piers at taskim (end of the sky train), next to the shangri-la hotel and at the river city shopping center next to the sheraton orchid hotel....this is a fantasitc tour of the canals in the thornburi side of the river...shows everyday thai life...
