Bangkok Travel according to the New York Times
As a religious follower of the New York Times Travel section (as well as a frequent traveller to Bangkok, Thailand), I have compiled a collection of my favourite articles in the Times written about the 'Big Mango' that I hope you all might find useful.
Wendy Brians Naples, FL "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." - Mark Twain --- 1. Green urban hotels (yes, even in Bangkok) http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/03/16...&st=tcse&scp=2 2. Where to find the best (and cheapest) food in Bangkok http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/01/06...=51&sq=&st=nyt 3. 36 Hours in Bangkok http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/30/tr...2206.html?_r=1 4. The Art of Thai Food http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/27/ar...q&st=nyt&scp=1 5. Staying 'Cool' in Hot Bangkok http://www.nytimes.com/indexes/2008/...geName=16smap& |
Thanks!

Thakns for the great links.

Great links, but I only get a map with that last one, and I was particularly looking how to stay COOL!

Rats! Now Chote Chitr will start getting crowded with farangs. Fortunately it is very difficult to find, so hopefully all those other people will never find it.
I do have to chuckle at some of their recommendations, such as in the part about having a drink at the Oriental, "Have a Singapore Sling — if not here, then where? " apparently forgetting that the Singapore Sling was invented in (ahem) SIngapore at Raffles Hotel. And of course, they have to recommend Cabbages and Condoms. Great cause, mediocre bland food. I guess after recommending Chote Chitr they needed something for the masses. I always enjoy the NYT travel section. Thanks for the links. |
Wishful thinking about Chote Chitr, Kathie. I've been to a couple of very hard-to-find places mentioned in the NY Times, even in scary dark areas that took ages to find. Once inside, the places were swarming with New Yorkers, clipped article in hands!

Neopatrick - once you get to the map, you should be able to click on the recommendations (red dots).

I'll be interested to see, LA. Chote Chitr was first written up in the NYT 5 years ago. I feared it would soon be overrun. But while a number of Fodorites have been there, I've never seen another farang there in my visits, nor I have seen any visitors with a block or two...

We were in Bangkok last week (hopefully will post the JBR later today) .... and Chote Chitr was on my list of places to go. We went on a sunday but it was closed, and there was another farang couple doing the same exact thing.
We went back a few days later for lunch and the place was full of tourists (all 4 tables!). So the "secret" is out .... but the food was still great. |
Admittedly, there's no bigotry or prejudice, but how is it that Bob has traveled so often and Twain's words seem not to have had any effect on the narrow-mindedness? Maybe he hasn't goten to enough places.

Sorry to hear there are now so many tourists there. But the food is just great, isn't it?

Bookmarking. Thanks for the links.

Gpanda, you're wrong about the bigotry/prejudice, tho he doesn't realize it. See his comment on the "saftey question" post on the Africa board. He thinks black South Africans are the "minority."

Here is a site with some more maps of great food places
http://importfood.com/thonglor_guide.html Just around the corner is a place with amazing coconut ice cream and also another place with amazing mango & sticky rice. Both have been around forever apparently. I spoke to the lady with the coconum ice cream & she told me she was the 3rd generation making the ice cream in the same spot! 2 great options after a lunch at Chote Chitr. |
Oops this is the page for Chote Chitr, the other link above is for Thong Lor (also great)
