bangkok to sukhothai
Is sukhothai a worthwhile place to visit from Bangkok for 2-3 days? What are the best places to stay? Is it not a very popular place to travel in Thailand because I can't seem to find much about it on this board. Will anyone share their travel experiences to Sukhothai?

We ended up not being able to fit it in our schedule, but I had done research on air, hotel, etc. You can take a Bangkok Air flight from Bangkok to Sukothai and from Sukothai to Chiang Mai, so you could take advantage of their Discovery Airpass, only $50 for domestic flights. I had found Orchid something guesthouse which looked quite nice in the brochure they sent me and quite close to the ancient city which is separate from the modern city, run by an Italian/Thai couple (if you can't find my previous post on this topic, with an e-mail address for them, let me know). I also found some great books on the ancient city through amazon.com, although used books. I guess we will have to save it for another trip! Have fun planning.

I love Sukothai but how long you should stay there depends on your interests. You don't need more than a day to see the archeological spots. There are other things in the area but more of the ethnic minority -- burmese refugee camps etc.

we visited Sukhothai for a day, while travelling by car from chiang rai to bkk. It is a worthy stop...the buddhas are some of the most beautiful and the temple grounds are enormous. we also visited the ancient kiln, bought some pottery fired with the same mud and techinque from centuries ago.
we did not stay there...but would go back again. |
The name of the guest house is Orchid Hibiscus, with an e-mail at [email protected]. We corresponded and they promptly sent me a nice brochure in English.

We stopped at Sukhothai on the way from Bangkok to further North and it remains as one of the most interesting places we visited. We did not stay overnight so can't recommend a hotel. The one memory which stands out in my mind is the fabulous museum. Do go ...I am sure you will be glad you did. Enjoy!
