Have fun, Sue. Folks are out and about here in Bangkok and there was an article in the paper about how the situation didn't stop the shoppers.
In today's papers there was a lot of talk about how many false bomb calls there have been over the last few days. The military is out on the streets and there's a lot of security in the malls. Life is unpredictable and you just never know what's going to happen,so I go on with my life. Happy Travels!

We were in Bangkok on New Year's Eve - returning from the Chatachuk market a little after 6 pm on the Skytrain. We boarded at the Saphan Kwai station, and as we passed the Victory Monument stop noticed sirens and flashing lights, but didn't give it a second thought. It wasn't until we were at dinner about 3 hours later and I was checking the news on my blackberry (I know, I know...) that I heard about the bombings.

We live in NYC, so are not unaccustomed to living with potential threats, but decided under the circumstances to pay the bill and call it a night. Everybody seemed extraordinarily calm and business as usual, and I would expect that is how it remains. (Actually, at the airport the next day I noticed a lone backpack on the sidewalk and told a security guard who seemed rather unconcerned - thought there would be a bit more vigilance after the night before!)

I must admit I was a bit uneasy and glad that we were leaving the next day. But, that being said...I do look forward to returning to Thailand someday as it's such a special place. I'm sure the bombings will dampen tourism a bit, but hopefully not for long.

Things can and do happen anywhere - you can't let it keep you from doing what you want to do - just exercise caution and use your common sense.

Safe travels to those leaving soon!!
