Leigh, I'm not familiar with comprehensive travel insurance (trip cancellation & interuption, baggage, medical coverage and med evac) that is sold by the year. Could you clarify? The only by the year travel insurance I'm familiar with is med evac.

Inam a Dan member and take out their policy. But, it "really" only covers emergency evacuation and the high medical coverage if you are involved in a diving or snorkel accident.
You should look at TravelGuard or AccessAmerica plococies for high medical expenses and evacation insurance and if taken out within 15 dayes of intial deposit or purchase of airline tickets, whichever comes first, it covers almost all pre-exising condotions.
I take Dan as well for the water so I am assurred one way or the other I can get access to suitable immediate evacuation if I I am in say Borneo and need to charter a medical jet to Hong Kong or Bangkok for treatment and then returned home by a carrier suitable to my condition based on the attending physicians on the case. A medical jet that goes 300-400 mph is $7-$10,000 a flying hour.

Stan, I don't take out DAN's policy, I just have their med evac which is a benefit of membership. Since Med Evac is all I need, it's a perfect choice for me. (For those that aren't familiar with it, while DAN is a diving association, the med evac coverage covers all kinds of accidents and illnesses.)

DAN does have various types of additional insurance as well.

TravelGuard or AccessAmerica is the kind of bundled travel insurance I choose not to buy.

Well we are off on the 20th to BKK for the first time and I'm not cancelling anything yet. I feel better when I read some of the sensible things that are said on this site. Bad things happen all over the world and you never know when, but you can't stop traveling. We have Ratt booked our second day there ( get in at midnight the first day) and will likely spend more time out of BKK. Hope this is isolated and calms down, we will see. Good luck to everyone travelling and the best for 2007.....er

I will be travelling to BKK end of Jan and my heart sank when I heard the bombing reports...we have no plans to cancel as yet..I just spoke to a friend who arrived in BKK new year's eve night and she said all is well, no chaos...everyone is still out and about shopping and eating as if nothing happened....

Kathie here is a summary of my anual travel insurance, taken from the policy document.------------
For those who wish to insure themselves while travelling for medical emergencies, delayed departures, missed departures, cancellation and curtailment, delayed possessions, lost or stolen possessions, loss of travel money and travel documents, personal accident, personal liability, hijack, legal expenses, and home emergencies whilst overseas.
That's what I mean by comprehensive anual travel insurance and like I said 'for £108 per year per couple' I wouldn't be without it.
Of course it may be that for US citizens it may be less attractive as you tend to have better medical insurance than we Brits. If you would like further clarification just yell.

I'm in Bangkok right now and have been for nearly three weeks. One of the bombs went off in my district although I didn't feel anything at my apartment building. I was home at the time. Folks are going on with their everyday business. I have things to do and can't just lock myself up. The skytrain is running and folks are out and about. Happy Travels!

On the coast everything is normal. We had our New Year at Ocean Marina. Today is still a holiday here.

The following link has a link to a map showing where the bombs exploded, as well as what appears to be a fairly comprehensive compilation of available information.

Well, just to let you know dh and I are spending most of today packing as we leave on Friday for BKK. I was very nervous on NY Eve as I read the reports but unless something else happens that is big, will not cancel. Our first night is in BKK then two weeks on Phuket, followed by a week in BKK, 5 days in Hua Hin then back to BKK for 5 more days. Will try to post a few quick reports while I'm there.
Many thanks to all of you who helped with many aspects of planning this trip.

cynstalker, that link takes me to an info page, not a map. Maybe I didn't spend enough time searching for a link within the page for a map?

Hi JamesA,
We will be at the Marriott Beach Club & Resort(in a 2 BR 2 BA time share ) on Phuket. This will be our 3rd visit there- love it. Also, I think it was you who said that if our rooms were free (for points) in Hua Hin (they are) we should stay at the Hilton, so we are. I'm even hoping that as I'm a gold Hilton member we might get upgraded.
I was pretty bummed out on NY's Eve, as I was glued to this forum, but now am getting so excited at the prospect of another trip to the land of smiles.

Again thanks to all of you who have helped in the planning of this visit.
Sue

Last Sept my husband & I went to Europe for a month. Over 2 weeks were in Turkey. We have some friends from th UK who were to join us in Istanbul for a week.Because of the problems in Turkey the U||K govmt. was telling them not to travel in Turkey. While we were there we had NO hint of any problems-except for the carpet salesmen. The trip was joyous and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I sorely missed our friends-we had met in Crete several years ago-met up in Rome the next year and then Las Vegas the year after.
I personally will not cower down to terrorists-yes, I try to watch where I am,but traveling is such a joy and learning experience that I could not live without.
We will be in Bali and Thailand in October. We have 3 weeks accomodations with timeshares. Should get my air plane tickets now-they may be down in price.Everyone Happy travels in 2007-Chris
