bangkok tailor
My boyfriend has his heart set on getting a suit made while we're in Bangkok, but we're not going to be there that long... I want to minimize long distances for fittings but not compromise on quality, and would appreciate if anyone has recommendations.

We're staying at the Davis hotel, Sukhumvit 24 in the Embassy area. We'll be there over the weekend for 2 days then on our way back for one night (leaving fairly early AM for our flight home). Does anyone know a good tailor in the area?

Thanks in advance!

strange you would call that area the embassy area...?? there may be one or two small ones there??

anyways....all along sukhumvit there are tailors...there may even be one in the hotel or near to it...i don't remember seeing one as my taxi passed by, but they would send you to one....if he goes first thing on arrival there and then has one or two fittings, then you go away and then goes right to the tailor upon return, it probably can be done....

totally not familiar with bangkok. didn't designate it the embassy area myself. saw it described as such somewhere else. what area is it exactly?!?

anyway, thanks for the info. is it risky to just use one along sukhumvit and/or the one the hotel recommends? i'd almost rather go to a known entity to the people on this forum, even if slightly less convenient. of the tailors frequently mentioned (ie - monet il sarto, raja, tramps, etc) is there one that is closer/more convenient to the davis?

i would call it the soi 24, sukhumvit area or just off of sukhumvit...

monet is where i go and it is quite far away....i have also used vashi on soi 4, sukhumvit....he does very very good work and it is not far from nana station....he is more expensive but does very fine work and has been there 30 is a family operation....many of the places on sukhumvit seem real pushy which i don't like....all around soi 4 there are tailors...

In the Sukhumvit area, 2 of the recommended tailors around soi 4 (soi Nana) are Raja's Fashions (opposite Nana Hotel) and Rajawongse Clothier (on Sukhumvit, right at Nana BTS station). I can personally recommend Raja's; others have had excellent experience with Rajawongse.

I agree with rhkkmk about pushy tailors: you're likely to be disappointed with a tailor shop that has sidewalk touts.

If I go to one of the better tailors, Monet, Raja, etc. would they be "put-off" if I brought my own fabric 200 superfine wool to make slacks and sport jackets? I supposer I would not know the "real" labor cost to do the work. I know they charge $75 for 160 superfine slacks and $250-$350 for sport jackets.
Does anyone have experience that would be helpful to me?

Shade22182 Dec 16th, 2005 04:59 PM my judgment, the best tailor in Bangkok bar none. Most of the embassy goes there.

What is the ballpark price for a suite at Rajawongse Clothier?

rhkkmk Dec 16th, 2005 08:10 PM

those prices look high to me....i have taken fabric to 3 different tailors with no problem....they will charge accordingly...
