Bangkok side trips?

My family and I are spending about 8 days in Bangkok next October. Any suggestions on side trips? I've read something about a place called Kanchanaburi. Is it interesting? How long does it take by car from BKK? I've read about a Budhist temple where they have tigers, and tourists can pet them. Do you know it? Again, any tips about it or about any other interesting place will be wellcome.
THANKS!!!!

My favorite side trip is Ayuttaya, the old capital. It is about 1-1/2 hours from Bkk by car. Its nice to return by boat or at least take a dinner cruise the night you are there.

I've heard great things about the tiger temple from friends, but I've never been myself.

lery, Katachanaburi is where you will see the bridge over the River Kwai. It can be done in a day trip although traffic can make it a long journey at times.

There have been several recent reports about Kanchanaburi, including one by IsisMunroe about a floating "hotel" there. Do a search, you should come up with a number of excellent and diverse recent reports.
