Bangkok Shopping - Pratunam Market
 

Hi All,

Anyone could advise how to go to Pratunam Market? We'll be staying at Asia Hotel. I read there're a lot of clothes to buy from there!

cross over the skytrain bridge go down staris take a left on soi Petchaburi walk for a couple of blocks untill ou are swallowed by masses of people. THIS is pratunam market,, it not a single market but blocks of small malls, street stands and wholesale/retail shops.. the cloths are manly no brand cloths made in local factory's.. if ya want fakes you may not get much help since they onbly show the "goods" too clients they know.

the one connected too Asia hotel.. if your staying on thanon (street) Phayathai, then your within walking distance of pratunam.. when your at the hotel look for the really tall builing in the skyline. (bayoke tower, talist buildig in thailand).. thats one part of pratunam market.

you can also get a motorcyle for less then 10 baht.. its basicaly down the street from your hotel longish street though.

actualy it's only about a 5 minute walk from Asia hotel too the begaining of the market area wich is near burger king. from then on your in one of the worlds great garment districts..

Hi, Orgy7. I will be staying at the Pan Pacific hotel, corner of Rama IV and Silom Rd. How do I get to the Pratunam market area.

hmm lets see...

-a taxi will get ya there for less then 45 baht. depending on which side of the street you hail the taxi. Pratunam market is basicly straight NORTH on thanon Rachadmari...

If you take the BTS. go too SALA DANG (sp) station.
-NATIONAL STADIUM rout.
-get off at next stop Rachadmari
-go down one level turn left.. (REMember to keep your ticket ya need it too leave exit the station towards your right.
-walk past the Four season Hotel..
-well acutlly keep on walking NORTH. cross the major street
-you'll be serounded by Gaysorn MAll (ultra high) and World center mall (big) -too keep it easy walk due that big pointy tall building (bayoke tower).. after you cross the canal bridge your basicaly at the begining of the distict.
NOTE you may need too cross some padestian bridges WALK UP AN DOWN STAIRS

-I'd say (if you can just take a taxi)
and if you havnt taken a TUK TUK this may be one of the rare times I'd say maybe try it out.. since PRATUNAM is well known and the rout is easy and short.. but as you get near pratunam you may be stuck in trafic inhailing a truck load of fiums. it should cost about 40 baht. but the tuk tuk drivers around silom are notorius for overcharging tourists and locals.

We just returned from BKK yesterday - also stayed at the Asia Hotel and walked to Pratunam two days ago. Walking to Pratunam was very easy - just pick up a good map. We used InsightMap and really liked it. Regarding Pratunam, we'd shopped there earlier in our trip (evening) and liked it, but found the daytime almost impossible to shop because there were too many people. Also, WARNING -- I had my wallet stolen by a razor blade slit to my handbag. I thought I was being very diligent because the same thing (slitting my shopping bag) had happened the day before while at the Chatuchak Market, so I was very aware of the possibility. They were very good though and when I went to file my report at the Tourist Police, I found another woman who'd also had her wallet stolen at the same time in the same area. I don't want to frighten you from going, but just to warn you to be very alert.

Lesson to be learned- carry your money is a security wallet that you wear around your waist- do not display any expensive jewelry. Do not carry a purse, but if you must just keep non valuables in there

in 6 trips to bkk i have never heard of or seen any theft...i am surprised...and two days in a row...??

My boyfriend has friends in BKK who took us out while we were there. One of them took us to the police to file a report and then to the Tourist Police to file another. He was telling us that pickpocketing and burglary has become a real problem in Thailand and the policeman said that the majority of these crimes are being committed by Cambodians and Burmese. I had read warnings of pickpocketing at the Chatuchak Market, but otherwise, all reports about Thailand relate how safe it is and its low crime rate. Relatively speaking, I think that's probably still true, however, it gave me a false sense of security and although I was careful, I maybe wasn't as diligent as I would have been if I had been forewarned of the dangers of pickpocketing. Thus, my warning to shaipei...

PLEASE..... it was probably a thai or whom everr. one thing I do know is that thais really look down at Burmees and Cambodians. so it's no surprise the police passed the buck... well in Pratunam it fulll of midlle easterners. indians and Nigerians... what ever. but I do admit that Pratunam market is one of the places I feel the least safe in (regarding pickpocketing)..
