Bangkok Restaurant Recommendations?

We're going to be in Bangkok (staying near Sukhumwit/Soi 18) early next year, and would appreciate recommendations for good Thai restaurants. Our experience on a previous trip to Thailand was that many of the restaurants listed in the standard guide books serve bland rubbish designed for tourists, and some of the best food is to be found in the cheapest, least attractive looking places.

We're interested in recommendations for both the cheap hole-in-the wall type of establishment, and any more upmarket restaurants that actually have food that justifies the additional cost. Places in the vicinity of Soi 18 would be particularly useful, but we're prepared to travel a significant distance for really good food. (Also, aside from restaurants, where should one go to find a good selection of street food?)

do a search on here as thereare many many posts about this very subject, draw up a short list and then everyone will be able to advise accordingly.
not ALL restaurants listed in the guide books are rubbish but obviously the trip is sifting through the rubbish.
As Mango said you have come to the right place

I thought my lunch at Chote Chitr was one of the best meals I've ever eaten!!! It is a hole-in-the-wall and not easy to find, but there is a map floating around here somewhere. Not near your area, though, but worth traveling to.
