Bangkok Restaurant / Bars
 

I am going to Bangkok in a few days and would like any recommendations for a few bars nearby the restaurants we will be going to. Nothing too outrageous, just someplace we can go to for an after meal couple of drinks without the long walk. The heat even at night at this time of year makes even a short walk a bit of an ordeal. We were in Bangkok this time last year and the guide we had was a bit lacking in good info. I'm sure foders will have the answers. Plan to eat at Harmonique one night and Baan Kahnitha another night. We are both 40(ish). Also planning on doing the Manhora dinner cruise, anyone had good or bad experience with this

i have spent the night on the manora song...they have several boats called manora...the song is fabulous, but i think it only takes up river cruises...

from the two restaurants you had best take a cab....i can't think of a bar near harmonique, except the oriental and shangr-la hotels, although i am sure there are some....go up silom road to silom village or patpong.... the same applies from baan, although i have yet to go there....lots doing around covent road as well

I presume that you mean Baan Kahnitha on Sukhumvit Soi 23, in my view one of the best Thai restaurants in Bangkok. If you walk back from there towards Sukhumvit you are spoilt for choices. Depending on what your tastes are, you have all of Soi Cowboy with the girlie bars or ?straight? bars on Soi 23 itself, including The Ship and the open air German Bar.

I have always found The Ship to be very friendly.

are you looking for a beer bar.. or pub
and are you seeking some entertainment at the bar or just a place too sit and chat.............

Harmonique is next to the GPO building and Oriental hotel. Baan Kanitha is at soi 23. Soi Cowboy / Nana would be a no. Not fussed about entertainment, just a place to sit with my wife and have a drink. We stayed at the Landmark hotel briefly last year but did not get the chance to have a proper look around town at night.I remember the Huntsman pub at the basement of the hotel was good. Something similar would be the idea

carefull this thread is about a year old. but has some good info i guess..

in june we went to both baan K sites...i my opinion there is no comparison...the soi 23 one is fantastic...we had a terrible experience at the other one and thought the food was only so, so.....the food and the ambience on soi 23 is perfect and excellent....

try haromonique on soi 36, new road as well for a different experience...

just checking out the old bangkok post just now. I see that the Baan Kahnitha has won best thai food from 1997-2003..

I wonder how many "gifts" are given too guarantee a win.. just messing.

I was just in BKK for the World AIDS conference. A group of us enjoyed Baan Kahnitha one evening. I also liked Lemongrass which my brother had recommended. I found the address on the web. As a review mentioned (I can't remember if it was fodors or frommers), there were quite a few ex-patriots. The food was good, not great, but on par with Baan Kahnitha. Lemongrass is also right near a stop on the Sky train. I can look for the address if can not find it. Good luck.

in my opinion lemongrass is overrated and overrun by foreigners---thats foreigners in a negetive way...its over discovered....harmonique is far better and the food is better....service at harmonique is their downfall...

cafe gallery near the sheraton orchid is also quite good...or is it gallery cafe---gpanda will correct me...

baan K at soi 23 is the best however, but also among the most expensive for thai food...

Thanks I'll make sure we haed to soi 23, I haven't been to bangkok for several yaers but have enjoyerd the lemongrass on previous visits but the bar has been raised by eating regulary the last couple of years at Nu's Thai he in Adelaide.

sorry, you are right---harmonique, soi 34, new road....next to the general post office and through the painted arch way....

Any other favouries Thai or Thai fusion restaurants in Bangkok anyone would like to recomend

For the person who asked about Celadon.

I ate there and it was lovely but expensive. Beautifully presented. However, I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to return.

i would also add the 3rd floor dim sum restaurant in the conrad hotel...dim sum any day at lunch for a set price....absolutely fabulous

thanks for the dim sim tip we both love a dimsum luch have you been to the other restaurants I mentioned? I trying to narrow the field as down as we be pushing to get around them all as we also love to eat at strret stalls and cafes too

the only one i know of is celedon and at the moment i can't think where it is??? i do not think i have been there...

Celadon is in the Sukothai Hotel.

For dim sum in a lovely atmosphere you could also try China House in the Oriental Hotel. Superb.

i knew it sounded familiar....we went there for lunch in 2002...very lovely...hotel is beautiful...lunch was expensive but very delicious...staff a little stuck on themselves....lots of ex-pat types there....i thought the attention to the customer could have been better for that price, but as i said the food was good...
