WinterTravel...As far as the Lebua goes, I had an extensive walk through of the inside of the place a couple of years or so ago before it was renamed to Lebua. I did a report on it in one of my trip reports. It was OK, but the building is very tall and the elevtors can take forever. Plus, due to some law, so they say, the apartment sliding glass doors have to remain locked so it isn't possible to access the terrace. Now, I don't know what law that is as the apartment that I have at Emporium Suites is nearly 40 floors up and I access my large terrace there with no problem. As for the location of Lebua, I didn't like it.
Kathie...Thanks for the info on Chatrium. They must have changed the policy because the sales rep that I dealt with regularly at Emporium Suites, until she landed a high position at Le Meridien in 2007, told me that I could spend time over there as well as Emporium Suites if I wanted to.
Craig...Thanks for the Chatrium website. I didn't have time to figure it out the day that I posted. Happy Travels!

Guenmai-I wonder if that is still true about the apartments.
On the Lebua hotel website, they show suites with the balcony doors open and there are user-posted pictures of the same on the TA websites. Those are all from floors 50+. Still, I'm not sure I'd want to be out on a balcony up that high...
Dogster, I agree, it's best to wait regardless. When I plug in my dates on the Lebua, the rooms are 200++. I'm hoping that maybe the Pen will have some "summer specials".

Winter- You really should try some of the smaller charming Thai hotels that have real charm rather than the artificiality of a luxury hotel, imo. I am able to stay at any hotel in Thailand, but prefer these smaller cute hotels. Good luck.

More thanks for the continued thoughts. Mango7 - are there particular boutique hotels that you know of in Bangkok that come at all close to the quality of rooms/beds/service at places like the Peninsula? Might not work for our trip this time, but others reading this thread might benefit...

I too have been loyal and we go to Bangkok the end of Nov but am seriously considering canceling our res and booking with the Shangri-la.
I HAVE to be on the river and i HAVE to have a balcony i have managed to get a res at the pen for 11700++ (balcony room - 3 nights) but i see the rate is now 16000++ so i am saving LOADS on the rate however with the exchange rate the way it is its still costing me £246 a night (2 years ago paid £140) so am thinking of swapping to the Shangri-la Krungthep wing this works out (with one way airport transfer breakfast etc and my beloved balcony) at £171 per night which is a very nice saving.
my reservatioons are:
Will i ever be able to afford the Pen again as i know i already have a good rate so should i go whilst its still (marginally) affordable
Is the S-La/Krungthep wing nice?
I do love the idea of the proximity to the sky train (but will miss my little river crossings)

The booking feature on the Chatrium website does not seem to be fully functional yet, but with emails back and forth to the reservations department we were able to complete a reservation. We'll report back after our stay to let everyone know how the Chatrium measures up.
Just FYI for anyone else thinking of booking there -- they told us that this is a "soft opening" and that only a portion of the rooms are opening now. The Club Floor, for instance, will not be opening until March. Unprompted, they said no heavy construction/noise during our stay. Fingers crossed....
Thanks again for all of the great suggestions everyone - looks like we'll be the guinea pigs on the Chatrium!

Smeagol: Yes the Krungthep Wing is very nice. We would return in a heart beat. While we did not stay at the Penn, we walked through it and had dinner there. All things considered, we thought the K Wing felt more Thai, was more intimate and had a great location, right next to the Skytrain. We also preferred their pool. Have fun. For April dates we were checking the K Wing had some good rates. Upgrade to a suite and the room is huge.

Apparently, the Intercontinental is soon to finish a major renovation, and is likely to offer some great deals:

Now, where is the Intercontinental?

Intercontinental is right at the Chitlom BTS station. It's right in the heart of the shopping district. Easy walk to Central World Plaza, Gaysorn Plaza, Amarin Plaza, my favorite dept store Central Chitlom.
Carol
BTW tengo... did you see the thread with the location of Khun Daeng (the store that sold that cute little crinkled satin bag)

Bob, the boat to/from Chatrium is running. We took it when we went to see the condos there. Shrewsbury school is right next door and the boat read Chatrium on one sign and Shrewsbury on the other.
