Bangkok/Pattaya accomodations

I will be traveling this November to Thailand and am looking for accomodation recommendations. Any suggestions for Bangkok and/or Pattaya? Or should I be looking at another beach community? I will only have 6 days, should I even try to do both? And any comments on the train system? This will be at the end of 3 weeks trekking in Nepal. I'd like to relax, but also be able to see some of the culture.

Have you considered staying at Hua Hin - about 3 hours south of Bangkok. You can get there by train, bus or plane. There are some nice hotels on the beach, plus some cheaper hotels in the side streets, and plenty of places to eat and shop. We've had two holidays there. We didn't like Pattaya at all - lots of bars and all that goes with that.

I support Marg about Hua Hin beach, it is much quieter than the infamous Pattaya. Cha-am beach just north of Hua Hin is also very nice, you can stay there in either of them. The train service is cheap, but not as fast as buses, however you will get better sights. The train station of HuaHin is very beautiful, and just in front of the Sofitel Central Hotel. You wouldn't have any problems finding rooms in HuaHin because there are plenty of them.
Royal River Hotel of Bangkok is on thonburi side of the river, less tourists, and much more peaceful, but i leave it to you.
Welcome to the land of Smiles.

Hi Carrie:

Try the Bossotel Inn in Bangkok - book the deluxe rooms in the new wing. It is a short walk from the river and transportation to all the main sites. We booked it through Planetholiday.com and got a very good internet special. Don't miss the herbal massage at Wat Po and the foot massages in the shop next to the Bossotel Inn!

We used the trains and buses. If you are travelling overnight I would try for first class. If not, 2nd class, air, LOWER BERTH. The Super VIP Buses are also a great way to travel. Usually just 24 seats which completely recline.

Have a great vacation!

Marg has said it all. There is nothing in Pattaya for the ordinary tourist. Even the water at the beach is too dirty for swimming. I think the suggestion of going to Hua Hin is a good one. It's only four hours south of BKK by train, and quite laid back.

Where oh where did they go in Pattaya to dislike it so much? I go there every year, as well as other places in the Kingdom. I don't swim in the water at Pattaya, but take the 10 baht songtaew to Jomtien Beach ten minutes over the hill. Nice beach, nice people and slower pace than Pattaya. My wife and I like the nightlife in Pattaya, the stroll along the beach (ignore the night trade), and window-shopping. Rent a moped/car, drive down to Trat, stop along the way, and look at everything/anything. Experience and then make your own decisions. Have a good trip and adventure. Ben

The beaches at Pattaya AND Jomtien are too polluted to be pleasant. While there are some fantastic restaurants in Pattaya I'd recommend looking elsewhere for a pleasant holiday!

If you only have 6 days and you want city and beach time. I agree, You most definitely should go to Hua Hin. The beach is clean and the water is too. The little hotels are 10$ for single,20$ for double a night. At least 3yrs. ago. Nothing fancy, clean sheets, screens on the windows, western toilet and a fan. Oh and the food is great. At night they have this outside food martket. Vendors set up places for people to sit and eat. It's great. Have a great time.
