Take a look at Somerset Suwan Park View and also the Adelphi Suites, if you plan to stay in serviced apartments in Bangkok. I'm going back to Adelphi, for sure. The location is super!

I have stayed thre, I think they are quite nice; I think I would disagree that the “furnishings are similar to the Penn”. First of all the units have wooden floors, which the Penn rooms do not, and they are not as luxurious as the Penn (esp the bathrooms). Maybe the décor is similar. But they are large, new, and perfectly nice and have a kitchen which is a useful feature. There is ony one restaurant and it does not really serve much beyond breakfast, but that is fine. The pool is on the roof and is completely covered, so if you want to lie out in the sun (does anyone anymore?) that would not be possible, but it does have a nice view, although it is small. There is a nice little bar area there. It is an interesting location for walking aournd some real neighboods (say “hi” to the US ambassador who does not live far), and is near a skytrain stop. I personally prefer to be on the river, but overall this is a nice choice. I would also say to look at the new Courtyard if you don’t need a kitchen in yoru room.

Don't forget, the Adelphi suite has a washer/dryer in the kitchen...

(I really should stop plugging this place... it fills up and then I can't get my own apartment there!)

I should also add that the bathrooms at Adelphi have both a big soaking tub AND a big walk-in shower with rainbath shower head. You won't find that at Somerset.

Hi - I had two stays at the Royal River Hotel on the Chao Phayo in their Deluxe rooms and the suite on another nite. They are both great - but the elegance of the suite was fantastic (living room, wet bar, dining room, bedroom, 1-1/2 baths, and wrap around balcony to see the city and the river). Pricing was $70 or $120 USD nite. I love to swim and their pool is not like any I have ever swum in (water cascades over the edges into catch basins - really awesome.)

The deluxe rooms have beautiful balconies to sit on and watch the fascinating river traffic. It is next to public boat stop #16 and two nite dinner cruises (one for tourists at $60 ea including buffet and one for smart travelers at $5 plus ala carte modestly priced). I was one of maybe 20 farangs total on the dinner deal along with 200 to 300 Thais. They were all great, filled very friendly conversation, and we had an excellent time.

there is nothing royal about the royal river, imo....its below a HJ in my view...it is a budget place, but is clean...other than the river front rooms are really not acceptable...

Bob, wasn't that the place you stayed for free as part of a NW Airlines package? I thought I remembered that you just barely tolerated staying there even though it was free.
