Bangkok - markets
 

Hi,

We are traveling to Bangkok in a few weeks and we will be there for 2.5 days during the week (not a weekend). While I have heard/read a lot about Chatuchak weekend market, we unfortunately will not be able to see it. Are there other markets that people recommend? We aren't really looking to buy much - we more just like the excitement and chaos of markets.

Also, in terms of the floating market, I had read that Taling Chan floating market is also only open on weekends - any thoughts about other floating markets in Bangkok that are worth seeing and fairly easy to access in Bangkok?

with that short a time i think you should forget any floating markets for this trip...

the weekend market is unique for sure... and no other one matches it...

MBK, a 7 floor merchandise mart is interesting as is the Platinum Fashion mall...

walking along new road in the middle of the day and late afternoon is an interesting "market" scene

pratinum market, near to Platinum is also interesting and a more traditional market place

Pratunam is an interesting market, but it is nothing like Chatuchak. Pratunam is narrow aisles, no AC, motorbikes and carts squeezing through, but not as crowded and not much to see here unless you are after clothing and scarves and maybe a few handbags here and there.

Pahurat is another market, but it too is nothing like Chatuchak. Pahurat is crowded, hot, full of motorbikes and carts. Lots of cheap (and I mean cheap) bling jewelry. Think 12 pairs of earrings for 100 baht! Bling necklaces for maybe 6 for 100 baht... I've not been into this market for at least a year. I went there often when I was buying cheap bling to take home. You will find similar jewelry at the Platinum Fashion Mall, but more expensive and bigger selection. You have to pay for that AC at Platinum! lol

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Chatuchak is a plants market. Although plants can't be taken home, it's interesting to browse if you are a gardener.

Across from Chatuchak is Aw Taw Kaw market (often spelled "Or Tor Kor"). It's a "clean" wet market, a good option for any foodie to check out.

The Sampeng / Pahurat area is very similar to Chatuchak in "ambiance". It's just not as heavy in the souvenirs. Both are considered "wholesale", so quantity is often required.

Thanks, these are all very helpful. I will research these other market options, and hopefully return in the future and check out Chatuchak and a floating market

i would recommend you for pratunam market.... more or less like buying lots of things and enjoy bargaining the price.... However in MBK is similar to other Mall but you would be able to find lots of stuff and shopping here.
